      MARCH 17 - Myrtle F. Hickman, 92, of Farmville, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in Farmville.
      She was born May 16, 1912 in Tennessee, a daughter of the late Daniel and Ida Huffaker Farmer. She was the widow of Paul Hickman.
      She is survived by a daughter, Ida H. McFalls of Farmville; grandsons, David McFalls and his wife, Rita, and Billy McFalls and his wife, Rhonda; and a great-grandchild, Lutisha McFalls.
      A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Family will receive friends Friday evening 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

      CREWE, March 17 - Mae Ashmore Shorter, 85, of Crewe, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005.
      She is survived by her husband, J.C. "Beans" Shorter; a son. Chuck Shorter and wife, Ruth of Chesterfield; daughters, Mina Ison and husband, Leo of Nottoway, Nan Vick and husband, R. C. of Crewe; grandchildren, Paul, Patrick, Robin, Jason and Ralph; and great-grandchildren, Mandy, Taran, Kendal, All, Corey, Tara, PJ and Nathaniel.
      Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home.

W. Henry Hubbard, 87

Dies in Virginia Beach

      VIRGINIA BEACH, - March 15 - William Henry Hubbard, 87, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Farmville, died at his residence in Virginia Beach on Saturday, March 12, 2005.
      He was the son of the late Frank Wilson Hubbard and Martha Wainwright Hubbard, of Farmville. He was a 1939 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.
     A native of Farmville, Mr. Hubbard will be remembered as a partner with his father and brother in the F.W. Hubbard Insurance Agency which Mr. Hubbard founded in 1919.
      Mr. Hubbard enlisted in the National Guard, June 21, 1937, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Feb. 3, 1941, and assigned to Farmville's Company G, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. After being transferred to Division headquarters, he served with the 29th Division in Europe during World War II. Twice wounded during the Battle of Normandy, he received the Purple Heart Medal and one Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds received in action. He retired from the United States Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
      He was a member of Francis Asburg United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, president of the Farmville Jaycees in 1952, member of the Twenty-Ninth Division Association Military Order of the World Wars, Reserve Officers Association, and the Retired Officers Association.
      He was preceded in death by a brother, F. Curtis Hubbard of Farmville. He is survived by a niece, Martha H. Schleigh of Midlothian; nephews, William Curtis Hubbard of Atlanta, GA, and Dr. F. Alan Hubbard of Wilmington, NC; great-nieces and nephews, Lea Cadden, Curt Clingenpeel, Gregory Hubbard, Ben Hubbard, Melissa Hubbard, Kent Hubbard, and Tommy Hubbard.
      The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 16, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. Graveside services will follow at Westview Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.
      Remembrances may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation, VFW National Headquarters, 406 W. 35th St., Suite 514, Kansas City, Missouri 64111. No flowers please.

Gerald Lee Duncan, 68
Dies Sunday

      FRANKLIN, March 15 - Gerald Lee Duncan, 68, of Franklin, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at his residence.
      A native of Hampden-Sydney, he was a son of Lois Dowdy Duncan and the late Herman Lee Duncan.
      He was a district manager and tax preparer for H & R Block with 36 years service. Mr. Duncan was an Army veteran and attended Hampden-Sydney College where he played baseball and basketball and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. An avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, Gerald was a member of Courtland Baptist Church and a past member of the Franklin Jaycees and the Hunterdale Ruritans.
      In addition to his mother, Gerald is survived by his wife of 37 years, Dianne Hundley Duncan; daughters, Sharon D. Mayes and husband, Wamer, and Rebecca D. Whitehurst and husband, William, all of Courtland; sister, Arlene D. Garrett and husband, George, of Tabb;four grandchildren, Katie Duncan Joyner, Taylor Hundley Joyner, William Lewis Mayes, and Dustin Jacob Whitehurst;an aunt, Goldzsie M. Duncan of Franklin; a niece, Susan Garrett Eng of Yorktown; and a nephew, George E. Garrett, Jr. of Richmond.
      A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Speight officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in College Church Cemetery, Hampden-Sydney.

Herbert E. Maxey, 80

      BUCKINGHAM, March 15 - Herbert Ernest Maxey, Sr., 80, of Buckingham County, died Friday, March 11, 2005 at his home.
      He was born June 7, 1924 in Buckingham County, the son of the late Leonard F. Maxey and Etta Self Maxey. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth M. Hunter; two brothers, Julian A. Maxey and James E. Maxey.
      Mr. Maxey taught Vocational Agriculture at Buckingham County High School for 30 years, after graduating from VPI in 1950.
     He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
     Mr. Maxey served on the welfare board of Buckingham County from 1958-1977: was a member of the Ruritan Club;and a member, deacon and trustee of Sharon Baptist Church.
      He is survived by his wife of 56 years. Christine Shiflet Maxey; sons, Herbert E. Maxey, Jr., and wife. Nancy, and Larry D. Maxey and wife, Jodi, all of Buckingham; a daughter, Linda M. Howard and husband, Lem, of Charlottesville; sisters, Mary M. Patteson of Dillwyn, and Josephine M. Wright of Isle of Wight; brothers, Leonard F. Maxey, Jr. of Hopewell, Robert S. Maxey of Scottsville, William A. Maxey of Dillwyn and F. Henry Maxey of Dry Fork; grandchildren, Herbert E. Maxey, III, Christina Maxey, Lauren Howard, Melissa Howard, Meredith Howard, Corinne Maxey, Olivia Maxey, Thomas Maxey, Coulter Maxey and Barrett Maxey.
      Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

      CURDSVILLE, March 15 - Oria Whitt Tipton, 88, of Curdsville, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Southside Community Hospital.
      A native of Madison County, NC, she was born April 26, 1916. She was the widow of Louis A. Tipton. She was preceded in death by two sons. Max and Fred W. Tipton.
      She is survived by four sons, Lattie Tipton, Hubert Tipton and his wife, Jessie, both of Curdsville, Danny Tipton of Lynchburg, and Olin Tipton of Forrest; five daughters, Mrs. Revia Lewis and Mrs. Frances Huddleston and her husband, Joe, both of Farmville, Mrs. Inez Jones and her husband, Tom, of Crewe, Maggie Tipton of Curdsville, and Mary Ruth Tip-ton of Mars Hill, NC; four sisters, Betty Davis of Jonesboro, TN, Leakie Jenkins of Mars Hill, NC, Beavia Hoyle of Weaverville, NC, and Chassie Scott of Asheville, NC; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

NEW CANTON, March 15 - Marie Hudgins Lightfoot "Bebo" of New Canton died on March 13. She was the daughter of the late Jerry and Lucille Hudgins.
      She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Aubrey W. Lightfoot of New Canton; a son and daughter-in-law, A. Eugene and Angela L. Lightfoot of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Hannah Marie and Daniel Easton Lightfoot of Raleigh; sisters, Patty and her husband, Wayne Montgomery of Montpelier; Eva and her husband. Buddy Thorp of Richmond; brothers, Paul and his wife, Betty Hudgins of Richmond and David Hudgins of New Canton. She was preceded in death by a daughter. Tammy Renee Lightfoot.

      He was born June 20, 1915 in Cartersville, the son of the late Albert Firestone and Addie Carnes Firestone.
      He is survived by his wife, Katherine Jack Firestone; his children, William M. Firestone, Jr. of Keysville, Judith F. Matthews and Mary F. Bradley both of Richmond, Lillian F. Johansen of Buckingham and Evelyn Dorrier of Charlottesvllle; a sister, Ruth Lawther of Buckingham; fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Firestone was predeceased by his first wife of 23 years, the former Beulah Workman of Bluefield, WV.

      She was born July 20, 1911 In Richmond, the daughter of the late Blake Wilson Corson and Anne Mason White Corson.
       Miss Corson was a graduate of William and Mary College and taught school in Buckingham County for a number of years.
      She is survived by two nieces, Marian C. Holland of Decatur, GA and Anne M. Field of Dillwyn.

Teacher, Dies

      BUCKINGHAM, March 8 - Frances Garnett Word, 78, of Buckingham, died at her residence on Saturday, March 5, 2005.
      She was born at Curdsvllle in Buckingham County on February 3, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Sidney and Annie Spencer Garnett. She was predeceased by her husband, David Malloy Word, III, her son, David Malloy Word, IV and two brothers, Willis Cook Garnett and Carroll Nelson Garnett.
      Mrs. Word was a 1950 graduate of Longwood College with a BS degree in Business Administration. She taught business at Buckingham County High School for 12 years and she served as the secretary to Attorney Claude W. Anderson for 17 years. She served on the Buckingham Housing Board and the Disabilities Board of the Piedmont Planning Commission for many years.
      Mrs. Word was a 47 year member of Enon Baptist Church in Buckingham County where she was the choir director for many years.
      She Is survived by a semi-adopted son, Vernell (Mopey) Booker, Jr. of Buckingham; a sister, Jane Garnett Moore of Midlothian; three nieces, Carol Ann Lea and husband. Mark of Midlothian, Mary Willis McCabe and husband, Bobby of Chester and Frances Gayle Garnett and husband all of Richmond: two nephews, Daniel Elwyn Moore, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Midlothian and Willis Cook Garnett and wife, Anissa of McKenny. She is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews and a host of special friends, including Louise Ross, Dorothy Woodson, Becky Payne and Tiffany Perkins and a special caregiver, Rebecca Powell.
      A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Monday at Enon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

      KEYSVILLE, March 10 - Lester Mae Overby Watts, 86, of Keysville, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005. She was the widow of "Nat" Watts.
      She is survived by five sons, William M. Watts, David L. Watts and Thomas N. Watts all of Keysville, Robert E. Watts of Nathalie and Kenneth L. Watts of Scuffletown; one daughter, Mary Ann Smith of Christiansburg; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one great-step-grandchild; two brothers, Frank Overby of Keysville and Ernest Overby of Hampton; two sisters, Mildred Shelton of Hampton and Kitty Pembelton of Jetersville. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles K. Watts.
      Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ash Camp Baptist Church, Keysville, with interment in the church cemetery.

      MARCH 10 - James D. VanderWaal, of Coatesville, PA and Fort Myers, FL, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005.
      He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on December 10, 1926. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Kidd VanderWaal.
      Mr. VanderWaal served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan where he was an aide to General Christenberg. He worked for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company from 1954 until he retired in 1981. He served as manager of the award winning Philadelphia Brokerage Operations, regional manager, and the national director of Brokerage Development. After his retirement, Mr. VanderWaal was a consultant to CIGNA and the Philadelphia General Agents and Managers Association and was inducted into the CIGNA Hall of Fame. He was a charter life underwriter (CLU) and longtime member Life Underwriters. He was a member of Radnor Methodist Church for many years.
      He is survived by a son, James C. VanderWaal and wife, Heidi and their daughter, Deborah Ropelewski and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Ashley, Sara Ann and Garrett VanderWaal, Frances Ropelewski and step-grandson, Travis Ropelewski and his daughter, Hannah.
      Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmvllle, followed with a graveside interment in the cemetery of Smyrna Methodist Church, Buckingham County.
      The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
