Dies at Age 96


      DILLWYN, Jan. 27 - Nell Baird Blanks, 96, of Dillwyn, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005.
      She was the daughter of Mattie Wood Baird and James Lee Baird and the widow of Lyle Blanks.
      She is survived by two sons, James Blanks and wife, Sandra and Hubbard Blanks and wife, Annette; a daughter, Mattie Gilliam and husband, Luther (L.P.) all of Dillwyn; four grandchildren, Julie O'Bryant, Jackie Ponton, Stephanie Christian and Cameron Gilliam; two great-grandchildren, Holly Ponton and Hunter Gilliam and numerous nieces and nephews.
      A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Saint Andrews Baptist Church, Dillwyn, with interment in the church cemetery.
      The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Andrews Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of choice.

      RICHMOND, Jan. 27 - Edna Harvey Dawson Hanes, 87, died Sunday, January 23, 2005 In Richmond.
      She was the daughter of the late Jesse L. Harvey and Carrie Cheatham Harvey of Appomattox. She was the widow of V. Wayne Dawson and John Blackwell Hanes.
      A graduate of Longwood College, Mrs. Hanes taught school for 30 years, serving in the school systems of Norfolk County, Norfolk City and Buckingham County. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and The Woman's Club. She was a former Board member of the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival.
      Through her longtime interest in American history and genealogy, she was a member of a number of lineage organizations, holding local and state offices In several of them. Among these organizations are Order of First Families of Virginia, Jamestown Society, National Society Colonial Dames of America In the Commonwealth of Virginia, Nathaniel Bacon Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames XVII Century, and National Society Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century.
      Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Dawson Yancey and her husband, William A. of Farmville; one son, V. Wayne Dawson, Jr. and his wife, Sandra of Goochland; four grandchildren, Holly Yancey Stout and husband, Neil of Richmond, Lauren Yancey of Arlington and Sara and Ashley Dawson both of Goochland. Also surviving are three stepdaughters. Temple Hanes Boitnott of Roanoke, Patti Gal Hanes Schmidt of Fullerton, CA and Dr. Elizabeth Hanes Thomas of Bethesda, MD and five step-grandchildren.
      A memorial service for Mrs. Hanes will be held at Bon Air Baptist Church on Sunday, January 30 at 2 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, Bon Air Baptist Church or to the charity of choice.

      She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Barry Arthur of Richmond and Kary and Jack Reynolds of Charlotte Court House; two grandsons, David Arthur and William Robbins, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, all of Richmond.
      A funeral service was held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, Glen Allen. Interment followed in Signal Hill Cemetery.

      JANUARY 11 - Francis Earl Davis, age 62, of Farmvllle, died at his residence on Sunday, January 9, 2005. He was the husband of Sylvia Bowie Davis and the owner of Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home of Farmvllle.
      Mr. Davis graduated from King William High School, Temple University in Philadelphia and Echols College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. He held licenses in three states, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia. In his 44 years as a licensed funeral director, he was manager of the Bringherst Funeral Home in Philadelphia, where he served many families of celebrities and large corporate companies, manager of Hill and Irving Funeral Home in Charlottesville, manager of the former Wheeler and Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, manager of the Echols Funeral Home in Emporia and, since 1993, owner/manager of Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home in Farmville.
      He was co-founder and charter member of the Independent Funeral Homes of Virginia, member of VFDA, Southside Virginia Funeral Directors, Virginia Funeral Directors Association, Masonic Lodge of Farmvllle and Shriner.
      He was the son of the late Robert Earl and Lillie White Davis; and the grandson of Brydie White, the founder of the B. W. White Funeral Home in King William.
      He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Bowie Davis of Farmville; a brother, Robert Edward Davis and wife, Joyce of Mechanicsville; an uncle, George Davis and wife, Katherine of Williams-burg; a stepson, Ronald "Ron" Glenn Davitt and wife, Linda Weaver of Fredericksburg; a step-grandson, Joseph "Joey" Michael Davitt of Fredericksburg; numerous cousins and three loving feline friends, Friskie, Mommy and Muffin. He was a lover of all birds and animals.
      The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with Masonic Rites at 6 p.m.
      Services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Farmvllle United Methodist Church. Visitation will follow at the B. W. White Funeral Home in King William on Thursday afternoon from 2:30 to 3 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel with interment in Jerusalem Christian Church Cemetery, King William.

      ANNANDALE, Jan. 13 - Marcia Johnson Payne, of Annandale, died Friday, January 7,2005.
      Mrs. Payne was a music teacher at Robert R. Moton High School between 1952 and 1959. In November, 2003, her daughter surprised her with a visit to the Moton Museum.
      A memorial service will be held Friday at Middle River United Church of Christ, Annandale.

      JANUARY 13 - Robert Terry Morris, 46, of Farmville, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at his residence.
      He was born May 12, 1958 in Georgia, a son of Dorothy S. Morris of Farmville and the late Robert M. Morris.
      Mr. Morris was an employee at Buckingham Correctional Facility.
      In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Robin Lynn Morris of Farmville; a daughter, Randall D. Morris and a son, James M. Morris both of Bedford; a brother, Greg Morris of Farmville; nephews, Joshua Morris and Seth Morris and a niece, Holly Morris all of Farmville.

      HENDERSONVILLE, NC, Jan. 6 - William Samuel "Sam" Loftis, 60, of Charlotte Court House, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at the McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, from Alzheimer's.
      Born in Greenville, SC, he was a son of the late James and Mazie Culbertsom Loftis.
      Mr. Loftis was a resident of Henderson County from 1966 to 1985 and was of the Baptist faith. He was an Oasis Shriner and a member of the Masonic Kedron Lodge #387 in Hendersonville.
      He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia Lyda Loftis;four sons, Michael Loftis of Belmont, NC, Randy Loftis of Richmond, Christopher and Jordan Loftis of Charlotte Court House; three daughters, Amy and husband, Aaron Willard of Belmont, NC, Mellisa and husband, Randolph Bryant of Farmvllle and Rosa Loftis of Charlotte Court House; one sister, Betty Bullock of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.
      A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hendersonville Pentecostal Holiness Church. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
