      JANUARY 4 - Sara C. Glover, 89, of Farmville, died Sunday, January 2,2005.
      She was born June 4, 1915 in Nelson County, a daughter of the late William C. and Hallie H. Canada. She was the widow of Samuel P. Glover of Farmville.
      Mrs. Glover was a member of Farmville Presbyterian Church.
      Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 5, at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home from 8 to 10 a.m. prior to the graveside service at 11 a.m. in Westvlew Cemetery.

      CULLEN, Jan. 4 - Ruth Perkins Carson, 81, of Cullen, died Sunday, January 2, 2005, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
      Born July 13, 1923 in Farmvllle, she was the daughter of the late George Perkins and the late Pearl Jones Perkins.
      In addition to her parents, Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her first husband, George F. Ziegler, Sr., in 1963; her second husband, Charles Cecil Carson in 1999; her son, George F. "Ricky" Ziegler, Jr. in October of 2004; and by four brothers and sisters.
      She is survived by five children: Margaret Kirkpatrick and husband Clifford of Forest, William Ziegler and wife Marie of Roanoke, Norma Kirby and husband Earl of Powhatan, Ann Howell and husband Frankie of Gretna, and Gayle Phelps and husband Charles of Richmond;and daughter-in-law, Pat Ziegler of Lynchburg; 16  grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter; and five brothers and sisters.
      A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502 by the Rev. Carl Weiser. Interment will be in Madisonville Presbyterian Church Cemetery at a later date.
      Friends and family may visit at the funeral home, following the service.

      CREWE, Jan. 4 - Mary Irene Morris Bennett Crymes, 71, of Crewe, died Saturday, January 1, 2005.
      Mrs. Crymes was the wife of Len Crymes and mother to two daughters, Brenda B. dark and husband, Bobby of Farmville, and Kathye B. Chambliss and husband, Joe of Greenville, NC; a son, James Michael Bennett and wife, Sondra of Richmond; grandchildren, Gary and Michelle Kerns and their children, Maryssa and Dylan, all of Cary, NC, Ryan and Becky Norton and children, Alec Zander and Shae, all of Raleigh, NC; a stepson, Ronnie Crymes and wife. Nancy of Richmond; a brother, Mac Morris and wife, Reabel of Burkeville. She was the widow of James Crider Bennett.
      Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday from Crewe United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Woodall officiating. Interment was in Wards Chapel Cemetery.

      January 4 - Rosa Rakes Fowler, 63, of Farmville, died Friday, December 31, 2004 in Farmville. She was the widow of Dan McDearman Fowler. She was a retired seamstress.
      She is survived by one son, Ray Snead of Keysville; one daughter. Gall George of Burkeville; grandchildren, Rhonda Howell, Edward Johnson, Holly Tomlinson, and Danny Snead;great-grandchildren, Tyier and Katie Howell, Brittany and Kristin "Aby" Tomlinson; one brother, David Rakes; and two sisters, Ann Jackson and Elizabeth May.
      A funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.

Smith; great-grandchildren, Zack Trent, Carrie Watson, Jessie Smith, Clay Smith, Jamie Smith, and Jordan Smith; two sisters, Sophie Turtlelow and Annie Mae Hillard. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nellie Marie Smith.
      A graveside service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Burkeville.

      Jan. 4 - Frances Scott Ligon, 90, died Thursday, December 30, 2004, after an extended illness.
      She was born August 14, 1914 in the Stoddard community of Cumberland County, a daughter of the late Thomas P. and Ellen Walker Scott. She was the widow of Woodfin V. Ligon.
       She graduated from the Stoddard School, John Randolph High School (Class of-31) and the College of William and Mary. She was a teacher in the Cumberland County Public Schools for more than 30 years.
       She is survived by two sons, Woodfin V. Ligon, Jr. and Thomas Anderson Ligon; an Identical twin sister, Sallie Scott Sanderson; a sister, Elizabeth Scott Crump; a brother, Thomas Porter Scott; five grandchildren, Andrea Marie Ligon, John Stephen Thomas Ligon, Mary Elizabeth Geesaman, Thomas Crumrine Ligon and Claire Woodfin Ligon; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Samuel Geesaman and Hannah Elizabeth Geesaman. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin Walker Scott and George William Scott.
      A graveside funeral service was held in Westview Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

      BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 4 -Louise Stanley Miles, 66, of Buckingham, died Friday, December 31, 2004.
       Born in Buckingham County, November 25, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Frank Thomas Stanley and Gabriella Dolan Stanley and the widow of James Cook Miles.
      She is survived by three sisters, Peggy S. Ragland and Annie Gay S. Reid both of Buckingham and Sarah S. Sprouse of Richmond; a brother, James Stanley of Buckingham; and a number of nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Glenmore United Methodist Church Cemetery.

W. P. Weaver, 67
Retired Tile Mechanic
Dies December 29


      January 4 - William Paul Weaver, 67, of Farmville, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at CJW Medical Center, Richmond.
      Mr. Weaver was a tile mechanic for over 42 years, and retired from H. E. Satterwhite, Inc. In 1998.
      Surviving are his wife, Ellen Marie Weaver; five daughters, Mildred of North Carolina, Cathy of Kentucky, Teresa of Virginia, Bonnie of Tennessee, and Selenia of New Mexico; one brother. Joe, of New Jersey; one sister, Artis, of New Jersey; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his father, J. W. Thurman Weaver; and mother, Kathelene Pridgen and one sister, Pauline.
      In lieu of services, the family will receive visitors in the family home at 95 Stonewell Drive in Farmville from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2005.

R. T. 'Bob' Newman, 80
Of Tennessee
Dies December 12

   TENNESSEE, Dec. 30 - Robert Thomas "Bob" Newman, 80, of Soddy-Daisy, TN, died Sunday, December 12, 2004.
   Mr. Newman was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
   He retired from Norfolk Southern Corporation after 38 years of service as a chief chemist. He was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma at the University of Virginia where he graduated in 1949 and of the National Exchange Club.
   Mr. Newman was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, where he was a top turret gunner engineer in B-24 aircraft. He flew 36 missions during the war and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the European Theater Medal.
   He is survived by his wife, Margaret Farmer Newman; son, Robert (Sarah) Newman, Jr.; daughters, Virginia (Greg) Pitts and Roberta (Calvin) Keeton; sisters, Charlotte Monaghan and Shirley Fowlkes; grandchildren April (Larry) Zappaterrini, Tom Nance, Ian Newman, Kip Newman and Peter Newman and a great-grandchild, Ava Zappatenlni.
   The funeral service was held December 14 at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with interment in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Dies Wednesday


   DECEMBER 30 - Judy Lindsey Turner, of Farmville, formerly of Hopewell, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004, after an extended illness.
   She was born May 31, 1941 in Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Turner, Sr., her father, William Curtis Lindsey and a sister, Shelby Joan Deloach.
   Mrs. Turner was a devoted member of Piedmont Church of Christ in Farmville and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Farmville. She retired after 15 years of service from Shamin Corporation of Chester.
   She is survived by her mother, Retha Mae Miller of Farmville; a brother, Leroy Doan Lindsey of Whitepine, TN; a sister, Mary Louise Finchum of Farmville; three children, Robert Lee Turner, Jr. of Petersburg, Sandra Lynn Turner of Colonial Heights and Susan Marie Turner of Farmville; three grandchildren, Kurtis Roberts, Brittany King and Joshua Bennett and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
   A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday at the Nelsen Funeral Home Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park.
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dies December 3rd


   COOPERSTOWN, NY, Dec. 30 - Agnes "Peg" Underwood Harrington, 104, died Friday, December 3, 2004 at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown, NY.
   She was born May 17, 1900 in Edmeston, NY, the daughter of Ambler and Flora Campbell Underwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lysle N. Harrington. A 1918 graduate of Edmeston High School, she was graduated in 1922 from Albany State Teachers' College and taught English in New York public schools for ten years. She was an accomplished gardener and a gifted musician who was still playing at the age of 104.
   She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Richard Booth of Brooklyn, CT, Janet and Marshall Hall of Farmville and Ellen and John Sanford of Cooperstown, NY; six grandchildren, Margaret Booth Homewood of Chillington, England, Janet Booth of Dresden, ME, Jeffrey Hall of Flagstaff, AZ, Jared Hall of Fredericksburg, Peter Smith of Burlington Flats, NY and Elisabeth Smith Price of Otego, NY; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Benjamin and Nicholas Hall, Sydney Smith and Elizabeth Homewood.
   On December 7 a private Service of Committal was held at Edmeston Union Cemetery. A memorial service was held that day at 2 p.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown.

      Mrs. Tharpe was a court stenographer for over 30 years. She was a leader of her church as well as the community.

Reverend Argle H. Johnson

Dies December 24

      KEYSVILLE, Dec. 28 - The Reverend Argle H. Johnson, of Keysville, born in Rural Retreat on May 11, 1921, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2004.
      He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rhea Blankenship Johnson; three daughters, Wanda Bowen (Bob Bowen) of Farmville, Sandy Shupe (Dennis Shupe) of Mechanicsville and Debbie Vassar (Norm Weaver) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; one brother, Frank Johnson of Aberdeen, Maryland; one sister, Grace Wright of Cripple Creek;seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
      He served in the United States Army during World War II.
      Reverend Johnson was called to the Gospel ministry in 1953 and during his ministry pastored ten churches in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. In 1999, he founded Emmanuel Bible Church in Keysville, where he served as pastor until January, 2004, when he retired due to ill health.
      Funeral services were held 3 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Emmanuel Bible Church with interment in the church cemetery.
      Donations may be made to the building fund of Emmanuel Bible Church.

Dies December 25

      VIRGINIA BEACH , Dec. 28 - Frances Newman Wallace, 95, passed away on Saturday, December 25,2004.
      Mrs. Wallace was born on March 29, 1909, to the late William C. and Ann Sydnor Newman. She was the wife of the late K.K. Wallace, Sr.
      Mrs. Wallace was a graduate of Longwood College, and a longtime resident of Norfolk. She was very active in St Andrews Church, as well as the Auxiliary at Leigh Memorial Hospital and The King's Daughters.
      Survivors include two sons, K.K. Wallace, Jr. of Charlottesville, and James E. B. Wallace of Columbia, SC; a daughter, Ann Wallace Barner of Virginia Beach; ten grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
      A memorial service was held in St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk on Tuesday December 28, 2004 at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Catherine W. Swann.
