Dies Tuesday


      TEXAS, Dec. 23 - Hugh Cabell Garland, 60, of Wake Village, TX, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at his residence.
      He was born December 23, 1943 in Farmville and lived in Wake Village for the past six years having moved from Iowa. He was retired from the Department of the Army having been stationed at Red River Army Depot and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
      He is survived by his wife, Patricia Garland; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Virginia and George Jamerson of Scottsville and a cousin, Margaret Dinelli of Midlothian.
      Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapelwood Mausoleum Chapel, Nash, TX.

      CREWE, Dec. 16 - CW4 Ulmont "Smokey" Ison, Ret., 75, of Crewe, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004.
      He is survived by his wife, Mildred W. Ison; his children, Kawanah I. and Ralph "Stinky" Vannoy of Crewe, Kimberly I. and Jerry Takata of Big Island, Hawaii and Ulmont Randolph Ison and fiancé, Cynthia D. Ewing of Crewe; two grandchildren, Kelly Anne and Rebecca Dawn Snead of Crewe; his brothers, Clarence Ison and wife, Reva of Crewe, Lawrence Ison of Gordonsville and Leonard Ison and wife, Myna of Crewe; his sisters, Emma I. and husband, Jody Rainwater John-son of Crewe and Edna I.       KEYSVILLE, Dec. 21 - A funeral service for Charles Ray Harding, 63, mayor of Keysville. was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Keysville United Methodist Church, with interment in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Harding died Friday, December 17,2004.
      Mr. Harding was owner of Tri-County Ford Mercury of Keysville, established in 1984. He currently served as the mayor of Keysville and was an active member of the Keysville United Methodist Church. He served as the Keysville United Methodist Church administrative team chairman.
      Mr. Harding served as an executive committee board member of the United Methodist Family Services in Richmond for 18 years. He also served on the BB&T Bank Board of Directors and the Charlotte County Planning Commission.
      Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Betty Rutledge Harding;four children, Tracy Harding Bennett and her husband, Paul of Red House, Donna Harding Shifflett and her husband, Mike of Midlothian, Mark Howard Harding and his wife, Kelli of Keysville, Alison Harding Gibbs and her husband. Billy of Keysville; eight grandchildren, Scott and Sarah Bennett, Rebecca, Dillan and Tanner Shifflett, Jackson and Matthew Harding, and Carson Gibbs; his father, Herman P. Harding Sr.;and three brothers, H. P. Harding Jr., John D. Harding, and Tommy Harding.

      ROANOKE, Dec. 21 - Janie Meredith (Jane) Woolridge, 89, of Roanoke, formerly of Prospect, died Thursday, December 9, 2004.
      Mrs. Woolridge was a graduate of Prospect High School and attended Longwood College. She was a longtime member of Grandin Court Baptist Church, where she received in 1988 the Senior Citizen Award for service and faithful dedication. She was a member of Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs, Garden Gate Garden Club and the Thursday Morning Music Club.
      She was preceded in death by her parents. Henry J. and Lucy Jane Meredith; her seven sisters and her husband, H. D. (Jake) Woolridge.
      She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Ed Miller of Daleville; her grandchildren, Edward and Meredith Miller; her nieces, Dorothy Campbell of Prospect, Sarah Jane Mick of Chester, Ruth Middlebrooks of Kitty Hawk, NC, Ann Cheatum, Patricia Elllngton both of Richmond; her nephews, Tom Glenn of Appomattox, Kenneth Jamerson of Lynchburg, Pat Bentley of Midlothian and several great-nieces and nephews.
      A funeral service was held at Oakey's South Chapel, Saturday, December 11 with the Rev. Carol Johnston and the Rev. Robert Hamner officiating. A graveside service followed in Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery.

      FLORIDA, Dec. 21 - Virginia Carol Warren, 84, of Port Saint Lucie, FL, died Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at her home.
      Born in Bon Air, she had been a resident of Port Saint Lucie for 34 years, coming from Farmville. She was a Methodist and received her Bachelor's degree and taught elementary school in Farmville. She was a member of DAR and a supporter of Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch.
      She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Heurring; two sons, G. Michael Warren of Newburg, MO and James J. Warren of Port Saint Lucie; her brother, Dr. James Simmons of Decatur, GA; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

      DECEMBER 14 - Ida Bell Kennedy, 94, of Farmvllle, died Sunday, December 12, 2004.
      She was the daughter of the late Robert Newton and Lula Wise Foster. She was the widow of William I. Kennedy.
      Mrs. Kennedy was a retired school teacher.
      She is survived by two nephews, Shelton Foster and his wife, Roberta of Dlllwyn and John B. Foster of Farmvllle. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Richard and William Foster and two sisters, Katherine Sprigg and Martha Walker.
      Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Amelia County.

      She was born July 9, 1909 In Halifax County, a daughter of the late Harry and Mary Love Little Booth. She was the widow of Irving Adkins.
       Mrs. Adkins was a retired farmer.
      She is survived by her children, Rufus B. Adkins of Burkeville, May Bates and her husband, Pete of Burkeville, Shirley Layne and her husband, Owen of Richmond and Tom Adkins of Burkeville; her sister, Sally King of Charlotte Court House; her brother, Edward Brown of Keeling; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren; her stepdaughter, Reld Schneider of Burkeville and many more nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sons, Irving Junior and Milton Adkins and her daughter, Virginia Robertson.

      DECEMBER 2 - Phyllis Jean McGuire, 72, formerly of Farmville and Cape Coral, FL, died at her daughter's home in Maryland on November 15, 2004.
      Born January 3, 1932 in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Beatrice Deem Mullins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel L. McGuire.
      She is survived by two daughters, Andrea Hoffman and Deborah Zukas; three grandchildren, Shannon Ellis, Shane Weiss and Anthony Spence;three great-grandchildren, Madison Ellis, Megan Ellis and Braden Spence; three sisters, Joanne White, Sue Hall and Shelda Coffey; four brothers, Robert Mullins, Charles Mullins, Roger Mullins and Carl Mullins, nieces, nephews and friends.

      Mrs. Jones was a lifetime member of White Hall Methodist Church where for many years she taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir and participated in other church activities. She was a member of Buckingham County Woman's Club.
       She is survived by a son, Maxey Jones and wife, Betty of Arlington and a nephew, Gary Robertson of Williamsburg.

      He is the son of Ruth (Rick) Redmond of Glenville, PA and Michael (Elise) Corbin of Buckingham.
      Mr. Corbin was a construction mechanic with Culbertson Construction Company.
      In addition to his parents, he Is survived by his fiancé. Sandy Herrmann. He is the father of Bryce and Jayden; brother of Julie (Jon) Goodman of North Carolina, Candace, Angelina, Ginny Lynn and Hannah Corbin all of Virginia and Christina and Diana Redmond of Baltimore, MD; grandson of Esther Miller of Manchester, MD and Vivian E. Noel of West Virginia; uncle of Dylan and Cassidy Goodman and many relatives and friends.
      Funeral services were held at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel P.A., Manchester, MD, on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment was in the New Lutheran Cemetery, Manchester.

      BUCKINGHAM, Nov. 30 - Gladys Mae Johnson Jones, 67, of Buckingham, died Sunday, November 28, 2004.
      She is survived by her husband, Henry Parke Jones, Jr.; a son, Bruce Jones Sr.; a daughter, Yulonda Ingram; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters. Mary Thomas Parker and Stella Williams; one aunt, Isabelle Johnson; two uncles. Harry Morris and William Neighbors; adopted like a son, Carlton Agee; a son-in-law, Ernest Ingram; six sisters-in-law, Teresa Johnson, Denise Johnson, Pauline Levy, Helen Mayo, Frances Miller and Geraldine Roach; five brothers-in-law, Lafayette Parker, Herbert Williams, Sidney Levy, Harold Miller and Steven Roach and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
      Funeral services will be held Thursday 2 p.m. at Slate River Baptist Church, Buckingham, with the Rev. Ricky Scott, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
      Her remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland.

      NOVEMBER 30 - Ella Louise Seay, 70, of Suffolk, formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, November 23, 2004.
      She is survived by two sons, Monroe and Gregory Seay; three daughters, Cynthia E. Payns, Andrea L. Matthias and Cleopatra Starks; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;a brother, James Brown; two sons-in-law, Robert L. Payns and Lejon C. Starks; two daughters-in-law, Fern A. Seay and Andrea L. Seay; a sister-in-law, Earlene Brown; two brothers-in-law, Humphrey and Harry Seay and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
      Funeral services were held Monday 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Cumberland, with the Rev. Donald Trent officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

      She is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Jones of Cumberland; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; four brothers, Eddie, Earl, Russell and Carl Brown; a devoted companion, Arthur Harris, Jr.; six sisters-in-law. Alma Brown, Doris Brown, Bib Trent, Ruth Epps, Sallie Jackson and Helen Jones; a brother-in-law, Philemond Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family, Tamara and Travis Gilliam and children.
      Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Cumberland, with the Rev. Larry Smith, pastor officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
