Dies Sunday
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Nov. 25-Zaida Thomas Humphries,
89, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, November 21, 2004. She was the widow of Dr.
Marion Kemper Humphries, Jr., and the daughter of the late Judge and Mrs.
William C. Thomas of Wytheville. She was predeceased by a sister. Czarina E.
Thomas of Charlottesville.
Mrs. Humphries is survived by a son and four
daughters: M. Kemper Humphries III, MD, and his wife, Jane, of Roanoke, Betty H.
Williams and her husband, Jack, of Richmond, Zaida H. Meade of Sacramento, CA;
Mary Nicholas Humphries and her husband. Jack Tranter, of Baltimore, MD; and
Catharine H. Martin of Roanoke. Mrs. Humphries is also survived by 13
grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Mary Kemper Williams Thornton, her
husband Wood, and their children Robert and Charlotte, of Richmond; Russell
Gilwee of Sacramento, CA; Michael K. Humphries and his wife, Anissa, of
Pittsburgh, PA; Elizabeth Graham Williams of Asheville, NC; Pettit Gilwee, her
husband Ralph Turner, and their son Tavis, of Lake Tahoe, CA; Lang Williams, his
wife Lucy, and their son Harrison, of Norfolk; Rebecca H. Carter and her husband
Jeff of Roanoke;Brett Gilwee of New York, NY;Mary Catharine Martin of Japan and
Roanoke; Rachel H. Tranter of Baltimore, MD; Martha Clay Martin of Roanoke;
Matthew Tranter of Baltimore, MD; and Chip Martin of Roanoke. Additional
survivors include her brother William C. Thomas and his wife Doris, of
Arlington; two nephews, William Thomas of Chantilly, and Jeff Thomas of
Bethesda, MD; a niece, Susan Thomas Amos of Seattle, WA;and a niece-in-law, Ann
Pauley of Virginia Beach. In addition, she leaves behind numerous friends and
relatives of all ages.
Mrs. Humphries was a member of the Second Tuesday
Book Club, the Rivanna Garden Club, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the
Stuart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Junior
League of Charlottesville.

Dies in NC
BOWMAN, Bobby Ray, 76, of Sylva, NC, died
Saturday, November 13, 2004 in a local care center after a period of declining
health.
Mr. Bowman was a native of Coalwood, WV and was a
retired Research Associate with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical. He was a son
of the late Walter R. and Mary Faris Bowman.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Alt Bowman;
one son, David Robert Bowman of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Christine Olivero of
Houlton, ME; one brother, C. Herbert Bowman of Meherrin; one sister, Ellen B.
Carroll of Meherrin; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
November 17 In the Chapel of Moody Funeral Home with Donald Hayes, minister of
Jehovah Witnesses, officiating.

a very close friend, Mitchell Thompson.

Dies Wednesday
DILLWYN, Nov. 23 - Fern Mae Armstrong Carter, 74,
widow of Leo Grey Carter, of Buckingham Forest, Dlllwyn, formerly of Staunton,
died Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at her residence.
She was born August 15, 1930 in West Augusta, a
daughter of the late Russell T. Armstrong, Sr. and Lula Huffer Armstrong.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Carter was employed
by Western State Hospital as a nurse's aide. She had attended Buckingham Church
of the Nazarene.
She is survived by three sons and
daughters-in-law, Wayne G. and Becky Carter of Buckingham, Michael L. and Rita
Carter of Covington and Russell E. "Rusty" and Lisa Carter of Deerfield; a
daughter and son-in-law, Janis C. and Clifton Felts of Colonial Heights; a
brother and sister-in-law, Russell "Buddy", Jr. and Joyce Armstrong of
Deerfield; a sister, Faith Delores Armstrong of Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Angela
Gall Huffman, Cynthia Michelle Baird, Michael Leo Carter, Jr., Mary Beth Crane,
Alien Edward Harlow, Joanna Grey Scheirer, Wayne Taylor "Rex" Carter, Charles
Leo Carter, Travis Felts, Sarah Proffitt and Cecilia "Sunshine" Felts; 12 great
grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a
brother and sister.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Saturday in the
Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bud Hall. Burial followed in Oaklawn
Mausoleums and Memory Gardens.

DARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Nov. 23 - Frederick Linwood
Wilhelm, 69, of Darlington Heights, formerly of Farmvllle, died Saturday,
November 20, 2004 in Farmvllle.
He was born March 1, 1935 at Eagle Rock in
Botetourt County, a son of the late Nelson and Florence Wilhelm. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Joan Crabill Wilhelm in June, 2003.
Mr. Wilhelm was a graduate of Virginia Tech
in 1958 and retired from Nationwide Insurance in 1999.
He is survived by his children, Debbie Glore of
Keysvllle, Cheryl Adams of Mineral and Mark Wilhelm of Crewe; seven
grandchildren: one great grandchild; a brother, Harold Wilhelm of Troutville and
a sister, Edith Noel of Covington.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. today
(Tuesday) at Heritage Baptist Church, Farmvllle, with interment in Trinity
Memorial Gardens.

NOVEMBER 23 - Dorothy Ayres Brown, 67, of
Farmvllle, died Thursday, November 18, 2004 in Farmville.
She was born December 18, 1936 in Buckingham
County, a daughter of the late James Ernest and Sarah Baugham Ayres.
Mrs. Brown was a home-maker and 4-H leader for
many years, an active member of the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad
Auxiliary and was involved in many church and civic activities.
She is survived by her husband, William F. "Bill"
Brown;
her son, James Marshall "Jimmy" Brown of Farmvllle; her daughter, Mary Brown
Farrish of Scottsvllle; her brothers, William S. Ayres of Richmond and S. Edward
Ayres of Williamsburg; her sisters, Kathryn Ayres Morris of Farmville and Doris
Ayres McElfresh of Blacksburg;her grandchildren, Leigh Ann Brown, James Franklin
"Frankie" Brown and William Michael Brown and her great granddaughter, Destiny
Renee Yates. She was preceded in death by her brother, J. T. Ayres.

Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sheppards.

He was born March 20, 1939, a son of Wayne and

two daughters, Rhonda Gryder Adams and her husband, Michael Todd and their
children, Todd, Troy and Maggie; Connie Gryder Queensberry and her husband,
Scottie and her children, Kaitlyn, Emily and Avery; two sisters, Madeline
Slaydon of Abilene and Mary Frances Throckmorton of Georgia; one brother, Norman
Gryder of Martinsville; his mother-in-law, Ruth A. Dunn of Randolph and many
other relatives and friends.

Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Foster worked at the Amelia Dress Company
and was a member of Glenn Memorial Baptist Church for over 40 years.

Mrs. Rothgeb was a retired homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde Rothgeb; her

C. Rothgeb and his wife, Barbara all of Crewe; a special friend, Dale Tatum of
Farmvllle; six nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her brother,

Alan Conrad Forbes, 89
Of Cumberland Co.
Dies November 11
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Nov. 16 - Alan Conrad Forbes,
89, of Cumberland County, died at a local nursing home on Thursday, November 11,
2004.
He was the son of the late Cleveland Owen Forbes,
Jr. and Agnes Ruth Shepard Forbes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy
Forbes and a brother, Cleveland Owen Forbes, III.
Mr. Forbes was born August 18, 1915 in Guinea
Mills, and received his formal secondary education at Saratoga School
(Buckingham County) and Dillwyn High School. He later attended the College of
William and Mary, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society and was
awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in 1940. He served with the Signal Corps of
the United States Army during World War II, and receive the Legion of Merit in
1944 for his contributions in the fields of communication and code work. After
his retirement from the Army, he returned to Cumberland County to become a
cattle farmer. For many years he also wrote a column of commentary entitled
"What Do You Think?", which was published In The Farmville Herald.
He is survived by his son. Dr. Michael S. Forbes;
his daughter-in-law, Jane Ann Forbes of Troy;a grandson, Daniel Alan Forbes of
Athens, GA; a granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Forbes of Palmyra; a cousin, Miss
Ethelyn Shepard of Farmville and his devoted friends, Mr. And Mrs. Roscoe
Thompson and family of Buckingham and Cumberland counties and Mr. And Mrs. Roger
Moore and family of Gladstone.
At his request, no formal funeral service will be
held.
Contributions in his memory can be made to the
Cumberland County or Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squads.

Charles Chapdelaine.
She is survived by three sisters, Mabel S. Taylor
of Dillwyn, Alice Beaulieu of Maryland and Edith Rowell of Alaska.

the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Bethlehem Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Anna V. Howe, 86
Former Resident
Of Buckingham, Dies
RICHMOND, Nov. 9 - Anna Vanneman Howe, 86, died
at her residence in Brandermill Woods, Sunday, November 7, 2004.
Mrs. Howe was born in Hyattsville, Maryland on
March 21, 1918, but lived most of her life in Virginia with the exception of a
decade spent living abroad. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years,
Murrill Norton Howe.
While residing in Greece, she served as
president of the American Women's Organization of Greece, Thessalonika Chapter.
She also served as chairman of the USO of Northern Greece. She organized and
managed many USO canteens for Navy and Marine personnel of the U.S. 6th Fleet.
She was awarded numerous citations by fleet admirals and the captains of such
vessels as the USS Midway, the USS Leyte, the USS Oriskany and the USS Franklin
D. Roosevelt. Upon the family's return to Richmond in 1961, she continued to
serve in leadership roles in civic organizations. She was president of the
Southampton Guild, the Cavalier Garden Club and the Commonwealth Women's Club.
Mr. And Mrs. Howe lived in Buckingham County for
25 years at "The Tavern" which they restored. Mrs. Howe eventually succeeded in
having "The Tavern" placed on the National Registry of Historic Homes.
Mrs. Howe served two terms as president of
Buckingham Women's Club and was also chairman of the Republican Party of
Buckingham County. She was an avid, lifelong, bridge player.
She is survived by four children, a son, Murrill
Norton Howe, Jr. of Pine Knoll Shores, NC and three daughters, Anne Leigh
Schaeffer of Jacksonville, PL, Sara Katherine Howe of Livingston, MT and
Christina Howe Entwisle of Lower Gwynedd, PA: 11 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday
at River Road Baptist Church with interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends this evening
(Tuesday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home.

Adams, 89, devoted mother and grandmother, of Buckingham, died Tuesday, November
2, 2004 after a lengthy illness.
She was a talented artist and seamstress and
enjoyed sharing her many talents with family and friends.
She was born July 1, 1915 in Buckingham, the
daughter of Frank Hill and Nannie Moseley Spencer. She was predeceased by her
parents, former husband, Herbert B. Adams and three brothers, F. Addison,
Charles M. and Edward C. Spencer.
Survivors include her son, H. Spencer Adams and
his wife, Winnie of Buckingham; daughters, Pattle A. Bailey and her husband,
Phil of Richmond, Nancy A. Maxey and her husband, Herbert, Jr. of Buckingham;
five grandchildren, John R. Booker, II of Harrisonburg, Susan M. Booker of
Richmond, Adam B. Booker of Buckingham, Nancy Christina Maxey and Herbert E.
Maxey, III of Buckingham; two step grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Bailey; three
great-grandchildren and her loving caregiver, Linda Moore, her family and staff.

was the widow of James A. Wooten, Sr.

Wooten of Lynchburg; four sisters, Elizabeth Hartless of Troutville, Irene
Farthings, Margaret Ogden and Sadie Campbell all of Lynchburg; brothers, Charles
Richard (Dick) Gunter and Percy E. Gunter both of Lynchburg; 12 grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter,
Siney W. Craft.
