AUGUST 5 - Lawson W. Atkinson, 88, of Farmvllle, died Tuesday,
August 3,2004.
Mr. Atkinson was a retired employee of The Farmville Herald with 22
years of service.
He is survived by a son, Jimmie L. Atkinson of Matoaca;
a daughter, Frances A. Borum and husband, Bobby of Amelia; four grandchildren,
Greg Borum, Brett Borum and wife, Dana, Joan A. Grandstaff and husband, James
and Janet Atkinson and one great-grandson, Zander.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Edwina Wickizer Nieuwland; his sons.
Tony Wickizer of Dlllwyn, Dan Wickizer of Farmvllle and Dale Wickizer of
Springfield; his daughters. Nancy Walker of Fremont, New Hampshire and Tammy
Lockheart of Maine;12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmvllle, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Louis A. Lehman, 79
Father of Area Resident,
Dies Friday
AUGUST 3 - Louis Alfred Lehman, 79, formerly of Richmond, died
Friday, July 30, 2004 at his son's residence in Farmville.
He was born January 18, 1925 in Richmond, a son of the late Herbert
W. and Annie Leora Pusey Lehman.
Mr. Lehman served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War
II. He was raised as a Master Mason in the Richmond Lodge #10 in 1957. He was an
electrical contractor.
He is survived by his son, Larry Alfred Lehman and his wife,
Deborah of Farmville; his granddaughter, Wendy Lehman Tillett of Cumberland; his
great-granddaughters, Holly Joann and Samantha Brooke Tillett of Cumberland and
several nieces and nephews in the Richmond area. He was preceded in death by his
grandson, Larry Alfred Lehman, Jr., three brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment to be held later in Arlington
National Cemetery.

Resident, Dies
AUGUST 3 - Joseph Henry Walters, Sr., 82, formerly of Chesterfield,
died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the home of his daughter in Dillwyn. He was the
husband of the late Virginia Gale Walters.
Mr. Walters retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service
and was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and Midlothian Lodge
#211 AF&AM.
He is survived by nine sons, Joseph H., Jr., Michael L., Terry D.,
Jon K., Steven E., Richard A., Kenneth G., Timothy W. and Daniel L. also five
daughters, Rosa Lee, Jo Anna Hatton, Sue E. Atkinson, Carol Lynn and Gale E.
Blair; 31 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A Masonic Funeral Service will be held 7 p.m. this evening
(Tuesday) at the Chesterfield Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 14301 Ashbrook
Parkway, where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8
p.m. and where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel
with interment in Dale Memorial Park with military honors.

died Saturday, July 31, 2004.
He was born May 6, 1970 In Farmvllle, a son of Esther 0. Bradbury
of New Canton and Snead Dandridge of Dillwyn.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife. Heather
Bryant Dandridge; his children, Chelsea Love Dandridge and Phillip Hayden
Dandridge; maternal grandmother, Agnes Ogle of Cumberland; three brothers, Billy
Dandridge of Gladstone, Earl Dandridge of Lawrenceville and John Dandridge of
New Canton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jones Chapel
Baptist Church with Interment in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Chester H.
Kirstein, Sr.; two daughters, Kathy Sink and husband, Tom and Gale Derringer and
husband, Chuck; one son, Chester H. Kirstein, Jr. and wife, Linda; seven
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters; one brother and many
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 12, at 6 p.m. at
St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Meherrin.

He was born June 11, 1913, a son of the late Samuel L. and Annie
Lee Godsey Ragland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Southall
Ragland.
Mr. Ragland was retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Factory In
Farmville and a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of Farmville
Baptist Church.
He is survived by three sisters, Elizabeth R. Covington of
Farmville, Lillia G. Ragland of Mechanicsville and Bertice R. Cristman of Glen
Alien and several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her sons, Kelly Ray Kline and wife, Sherry of
Farmville Robert (Bob) Cole-man and wife, Judy of Richmond and Roger Kline and
wife, Judy of Duck, NC; her sisters, Brenda King and husband, Bob of Cumberland
and Dorothy Nickles of Florida; her brother, W. G. Lester of Richmond; numerous
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son,
William Coleman, Jr.

Frances Abbott Stockton, 77, of Farmvllle, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at
Southslde Community Hospital following a courageous battle with heart problems
and cancer.
She was born March 28, 1927 In Rice, a daughter of the late Newton
T. Abbott and Minnie T. Abbott. She was also preceded In death by a brother,
Edmond T. Abbott.
Mrs. Stockton was a retired office nurse for several local
physicians, and a member of Bethpeor Baptist Church where she served as pianist
and Sunday School teacher prior to her illnesses.
She is survived by her husband of over 55 years, Ronald W.
Stockton; one daughter, Rhonda S. Rowland and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Michael
A. Rowland all of Farmvllle.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home
with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Lawrence Watkins Styles, 83, of Farmville, died Monday, June 28, 2004 In
Farmvllle.
He was born in Prince Edward County on March 21, 1921, a son of the late
Peter and Bertha Ford Styles. He was the widower of Elizabeth A. Styles.
Mr. Styles retired from VEPCO In 1986 after 35 years of
employment. He also was employed by Farmvllle United Methodist Church as their
sexton working evening hours for 32 years until 1994. He was a member of First
Baptist Church in Farmvllle.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara; son, Lawrence;
four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers and three
sisters-in-law, Calvin and Minnie Styles of Baltimore, MD, Dr. Twitty Styles and
Dr. Constance Glasco Styles of Clifton Park, NJ and Mary Styles of Baltimore,
MD; a devoted niece, Shirley S. Carr of Pamplin; a host of nieces, nephews,
other relatives, friends and two special friends, Louis Freeman and Sara Pruitt.
He was preceded in death by five siblings, Loyd Styles (twin brother), Luther
Styles, Arsenia Styles, Leora Brown and Florence Thompson.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 2 in the Minor B. Eggleston
Chapel, Farmville, with interment in Odd Fellow Cemetery.

CLARKSVILLE, July 22 -Marvin Lester Carter, 83. of Crewe, formerly
of Clarksville, widower of Lessie Allgood Carter, died Monday, July 19, 2004 In
Farmvllle.
The son of William Pat and Lillie Carter, he was born and reared in
the Finchley and Fields community.
Mr. Carter worked as a carpenter all of his adult life in addition
to farming; and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest Garland and Joyce
Carter of Ken-bridge, Marshall Franklin and Jeanette Carter of Abilene and
Wallace Wade Carter of Buffalo Junction; daughter and son-in-law, Martha Jane
and Harry Gaston of Roanoke; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and
sisters, Gladys Harris of Finchley and Katheleen Coleman of Columbia, SC.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Chapel of
Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, Clarksville, with interment in Bluestone

He was born in Patrick County on October 11, 1914 to the late James
C. and Rosa A. Rakes.
Mr. Rakes was a veteran of World War II, a retired farmer and mill
worker and a member and Deacon of Meherrin Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louetta Stanley Rakes; a
daughter, Linda Bolan and husband. Jack of Meherrin; a daughter-in-law,
Elizabeth Rakes of Keysvllle; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by a son, David Earl Rakes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Browning
Funeral Home, Keysville, with interment in Union Grove Church Cemetery.

Wednesday, July 14, 2004.
She was born in Farmvllle on July 24, 1914 to James Lee Putney and
Blanche Gilliam Putney. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lloyd Staton
Noel and John Walker Biscoe, Sr.
She graduated from Long-wood College and taught school in North
Carolina and Virginia before retiring from teaching at Varina High School.
She is survived by her children, Blanche Gilliam Noel Perry and her
husband, H. Boyd Perry, Lloyd Staton Noel, Jr. and his wife, Dale Noel;
grandchildren, Martha Katherine Perry and her husband, Robert R. Probst, Laura
Noel Perry and her husband, Barry Bram, Carlyle Station Perry and his wife, Anna
Perry, Lloyd Staton Noel, III and his wife, Deborah Noel and Tracy Allen Noel
and his wife, Jody Noel; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and
nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at Parham

Dies Monday
WINGINA, July 15 - Betty Lann Stinson, 72, of Wingina, died Monday,
July 12, 2004 at the UVA Hospital in Charlottesville.
She was born September 26, 1932 in Buckingham County, a daughter of
the late Nick M. Lann, Sr. and Ruby W. Lann. She was preceded in death by her
bothers, Nick, Jr., James, Gene and Edgar Lann and her sisters, Florence L.
Wiseman and Mable L. Simpson.
Mrs. Stinson helped co-found Kirby L. Stinson Paving Inc. in 1972
and served as its secretary from its beginning until her death. She was a
devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a dedicated church member where
she taught Sunday School, served on committees and was the treasurer for some 40
plus years.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Kirby L. Stinson; her
children and their spouses, Kirby, Jr. and Wanda Stinson, Gary and Doris
Stinson, Debora and Billy Black all of Wingina and Linda and T. C. Harvey of
Appomattox; her grandchildren, Hope, Lewis and Katie Stinson of Wingina, and
Cole Harvey of Appomattox; brothers, Herbert Lann of Dillwyn and Ray Lann of
Buckingham and sisters. Ruby L. Bryant of Altavista and Elizabeth L. Plunkett of
Indiana.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6:30
to 8:30 p.m. at Spears Mountain Baptist Church on Rt. 604 In western Buckingham
County where services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Odell
Coggins, Rev. Harold Powers and Rev. Buddy Bryant officiating. Interment will be
in the Buckingham Community Cemetery.
