Christine Banton, 57
Held Saturday
RICE, June 29 - Christine Faye Bates Banton, 57, of Rice, died at
her residence.
She was born September 21, 1946 in Prince Edward County, a daughter
of the late Allie Alfred and Daisy Tatum Bates.
Mrs. Banton worked at the Crewe Garment Factory for over 18 years
and retired as a store manager.
She is survived by a son, Michael Scott Banton, of Washington DC,
formerly of Rice; a daughter, Alisa Jane Banton of Rice; grandchildren, Tatum
Wayne and Jade Sierra Neal both of Rice; a sister, Frances Bates Bolt of Rice;
nieces and nephews, Linda Bolt of Lewes, DE, Marsha Bolt of Powhatan and
Lawrence Edward Bolt of Amelia; an uncle, Lewis Tatum of Keysvllle and many more
nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was held 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of God of
Prophecy in Burkeville. A private interment was held Sunday.

Dies Thursday
JUNE 29 - Alease Owen Nunnally, 76, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 in
Farmvllle.
Mrs. Nunnally was a retired school teacher and the widow of Walter
Raleigh Nunnally.
She is survived by two daughters, Lyn W. Wellner of Anchorage,
Alaska and Jane W. Madden of Houston, Texas; a sister, Agnes Thompson of
La-Crosse; a brother, Milton Owen, Jr. of Cumberland, Rhode Island and three
grandchildren, Nicholas, Stephanie, Andrew and Anne Wellner.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Farmvllle Baptist
Church with interment in Tussekiah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Buckingham County Native,
Dies Friday
JUNE 29 - Rosa "Vernell" LeSueur Toney, 89, of Midlothian, formerly
of Buckingham, died Friday, June 25, 2004 in an Amelia nursing home.
Born August 9, 1914 in Buckingham County, she was the daughter of
the late Edgar LeSueur and Martha Bryant LeSueur. She was the widow of Lindsay
G. Toney.
She is survived by her children, Lindsay M. Toney of Midlothian,
Doris G. Tanner of Richmond and Claude A. Toney of Buckingham; a brother,
William LeSueur of Arvonia; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Dunkum Funeral
Home, Dillwyn, with interment In Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

DILLWYN, June 29 - Minnie Lee Agee Newton, 84, of Dillwyn, died
Thursday, June 24, 2004 at her home.
She was born May 11, 1920 in Buckingham County, a daughter of the
late John Agee and Laura Goin Agee. She was the widow of John Elijah Newton.
She is survived by her daughter, Freida N. Hensley and husband,
Mike of Farmvllle; a sister, Elizabeth Newton of Dillwyn and three step
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist
Church with Interment in the church cemetery.

DILLWYN, June 29 - George Washington Ragland, 83, of Dillwyn, died
Saturday, June 26,2004.
He was born May 24, 1921 in Buckingham County, a son of the late
Richard Beverly Rag-land and Sallie Jamerson Ragland.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Sloan Ragland; a son, Beverly
Ragland; a stepson, Andrew Jamerson both of Dillwyn; two sisters, Louise R.
Dunkum of New Canton and Frances R. Allen of Midlothian: five grandchildren,
Emily Harroun and Amy Jamerson both of Illinois, Ryan, Holly and Richard Ragland
all of Dlllwyn; four great grandchildren, Dane Brown, Brandon Harroun and Bailey
Jamerson of Illinois and Keith Ragland of Dlllwyn.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Dunkum
Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

in New Jersey and a US Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Persons Tine; two sons, James
Tine of Texas and Stephen Tine of New Jersey; a daughter, Sharon Yieter of
Indiana and a stepson, Charles Porter of New Jersey.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 7:30
p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral
Home, Farmville.

NEW CANTON, June 22 -John E. "Jack"
Behrend, 82, of New Canton, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at his home.
He was born October 1, 1921 in Washington, DC, a son of the late
Eugene E. Behrend and Bertha Heint. He was the widower of June S. Behrend.
He is survived by his children, James E. Behrend and wife, Lee Beth
of Cleveland, OH, Virginia A. Behrend of Lynchburg, Valarie B. Van Witzenburg
and husband, Ronald of New Canton and Jon S. Behrend of St. Petersburg, FL. He
was the loving grandfather of Julia B. Szilagyi and husband, Keith, Courtney L.
Behrend, Rebecca L. Van Witzenburg, Melissa A. Van Witzenburg, Samantha L. Van
Witzenburg and John S. Van Witzenburg.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Mr. Harper was a US Navy veteran, a 50 year Lions Club member, four
star athlete of William and Mary College and master of two dogs. Sandy and
Brandy.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Baker Harper; a son,
David W. Harper and his wife, Shelia of Nottoway; a sister, Lou Muse of Richmond
and a nephew, William Muse of Richmond.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Cumberland
Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Teresa James of Louisa and Cathy Scruggs of Kansas City, KS; two stepdaughters,
Sharon Ragland and Chrissy Burnley both of Buckingham; four sisters, Betty W.
Dean, Maude E. Jones and Beatrice Boiling all of New Canton and Lenora J. Jones
of Richmond; a brother, Henry B. Jones of New Canton; four sons-in-law, Joseph
Scruggs, Ricky Burnley, William Bradley and Kenneth Ragland; two
brothers-in-law, Joseph E. Dean of New Canton and James Jennings of La Mita, CA;
18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Monday at the Frances Redwood
Center, Arvonia, with the Rev. Roderick Galloway and the Rev. Harold Powers
officiating. Interment followed in the Arvonia Community Cemetery.

Dies in Delaware
DELAWARE, June 22 - John Miller Spencer,
Sr., of Millville, DE, formerly of Farmville, died Friday, June 18, 2004.
He was born in Beckley, WV, a son of the late John H. and Blanche
G. Spencer.
Mr. Spencer was a property manager for many years and was World War
II Army Air Corps veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Mary W. "Nan" Spencer; two sons, John
M. Spencer, Jr. of Reisterstown, MD and William C. Spencer of Baldwin, MD and
three grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private.

Retired Teacher
Dies June 17
CUMBERLAND, June 22 -Beverly Hammond
Lucas, 85, of Cumberland, died Thursday, June 17,2004.
Born March 15, 1919 in Charles Town, West Virginia, she was the
daughter of the late Charles Edgar and Lean Wiltshire Hammond. She was preceded
in death by her twin sister, Made and her brother, James E. Hammond.
Upon graduation from Shepherd College, Mrs. Lucas began her
teaching career which spanned 50 years. In addition to being an excellent
teacher, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and church worker. She
served faithfully in God's calling as a minister's wife and for 58 years was the
partner and helpmate of her husband, the Rev. Dargan Lucas.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children,
Beverly Lucas Hill and husband. Jerry of Powhatan, Charles D. Lucas and wife,
Linda of Clemmons, NC and Richard D. Lucas and wife, Mary of Roanoke; nine
grandchildren, Troy, Lindsey, Ben, Beth, Jeremy, Lauren, John, Scott and Joshua;
one great-grandson, Matthew and a sister-in-law, Anne Hammond.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Dunkum Funeral Home,
Dillwyn, with interment at 7 p.m. in Trinity Cemetery in Daleville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Rescue Squad.

She was active in the Reach to Recovery for breast cancer patients
and was the transcriptionist for the Oncology Department at Southslde Community
Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, John M. Edwards; two sons, Robbie
Price of Powhatan and Tony Price of Richmond; one brother, John Paul Jones, Jr.
of Richmond; one stepson, Johnny Edwards of Charlotte Court House; two
stepdaughters, Jane Cary of Prospect and Janet Tuck of White Plains, MD; seven
grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon K. Grubbs and a sister, Anita Lewis.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Saturday at Cullen Baptist Church
with interment in Pamplln Community Cemetery,
