She was born December 10, 1911 in South Carolina. She was the widow
of Benjamin Frank Calderwood.
She is survived by two children, Gall C. Thompson and her husband.
Major and John D. Calderwood and his wife, Dianne; six grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Piedmont Church of
Christ, Farmville.

Dies Wednesday
WORSHAM. March 4 - Jessie Wood Southall, 91, of Worsham, died
Wednesday, March 3, 2004.
She was born July 11, 1912 in Prince Edward County, a daughter of
the late Jesse and Frances Garland Wood.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy S. Dinelli; a nephew, Hugh Cabell Garland;
a daughter-in-law, Mary Virginia Southall; grandchildren, Jo Anne Nolte, Carol
Lynn Lewis, Keith Lewis, Michael Dinelli, Hope Wallin, Mark Southall, Donna
Neese and Janet Southall; 11 great grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Bernard (Peter)
Southall and a sister, Frances Wood Garland.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday in Trinity
Memorial Gardens, Rice.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to
8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

ARVONIA, March 4 - Nannie Gormus Newton, 81, of Arvonia. died
Wednesday, March 3, 2004.
Born in Buckingham County, she was the daughter of the late Willie
and Laura Wharam Gormus.
She is survived by her husband, Howell A. Newton; a foster
daughter, JoAnn Stanley of Dillwyn; three sisters, Annie Mae Bryant and Margaret
Stout of Dillwyn and Sarah G. Davis of New Canton; two brothers, Walter Gormus
of Dillwyn and Clarence (Monk) Gormus of New Canton; a granddaughter and very
loving and devoted stepchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam
and William Gormus.
Mrs. Newton was a life member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church,
Arvonia, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment will be
in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
at the Colbert Funeral Home, Bremo Bluff.

Dies Feb. 20
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, NJ, March 4 - Charles L. Kidd, 82, died Friday,
February 20, 2004 In Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.
Born in Appomattox County on July 15, 1921, he had resided in the
area for more than 60 years. He was a retired employee of the State of New
Jersey.
Mr. Kidd was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in Okinawa. He was
an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was the son of the late William Jurdon and Annie Ballowe Kidd
and brother of the late William E. Kidd and Edith Kidd Truslow.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Matera Kidd; six sisters,
Virginia Kidd Hicks, Annie Mae Kidd Jones, Emma Sue Kidd Boutchyard, Louise
Kitty Cox and Ruth Kidd Gamer all of Fredericksburg and Mary Kidd Senger of
Farmville and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 25 at the
Mullen Funeral Home, Trenton, NJ. Burial was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery,
Hamilton Township.

MARCH 4 Amanda Gambrell Pitts, 95, died Tuesday, March 2,
2004 in Farmville. She was the widow of W. Clyde Pitts.
She is survived by her daughter, Glenda P. Stimpson of Farmville;
her son, Larry C. Pitts of Greenville, SC; her four grandchildren, Jeff
Stimpson, Wade Stimpson, Jr., Brian Pitts and Sean Pitts and her
great-grandchildren, Reeve Stimpson, Halley Stimpson, Jessee Stimpson, Riley
Stimpson, Lauren Stimpson, Trey Stimpson, III, Bailey Pitts and Ellis Pitts.
Graveside services were held 1 p.m. today (Thursday) in The
Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.

Dies Tuesday
PAMPLIN, March 4 - Rachel Inge Ranson, 87, of Pamplin, died
Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at her residence.
Born in Appomattox County on March 14, 1916, she was the daughter
of the late Mary Hamilton Inge and Holmesy Inge, Sr. She was the widow of Harry
Wilson Ranson.
Mrs. Ranson was a faithful and dedicated member of Rocks Baptist
Church and her community. She retired from Amelia Dress Company.
She is survived by three sons, Harry E. Ranson and wife, Joan,
Frank Roy Ranson and Mike Ranson and wife, Betty; three daughters, Louise Roach
and husband, Aulden, Mary Edith Morris and husband, Glenn and Ruth Caldwell and
husband, Bill all of Pamplin; ten grandchildren, Cindy Shorter, Debbie Lakes,
Ken Caldwell, Susan Smith, Patty Rimbey, Billy Caldwell, Amy Martin, Jennifer
Walton, Otis Ranson and Amanda Ranson; 17 great grandchildren, Angela, Beverly,
William, Kathryn and Rebekah Shorter, Jeremy and Rachel Lakes, Earl and Grayson
Rimbey, Josey and Ethan Walton, Jordan Martin, Hannah, Harry, Colleen, Kendall
and Leah Caldwell and three caregivers, Esther Braxton, Nancy Woody and Zandra
Elder. One brother and sister-in-law, Alice and Holmesy Inge, Jr. preceded her
in death.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Rocks Baptist
Church by the Rev. Chris Harbin. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Beatrice N. Stoner, 87
Of Rice
Dies Monday
RICE, March 2 - Beatrice Newman Stoner, 87, of Rice, died
Monday, March 1, 2004 at her home.
She was born September 20, 1916 in Danville, a daughter of the late
Annie and Nathan Newman. She was raised by her mother's sister. Aunt Mamie, who
became her stepmother. Her mother died when Bea was two.
Mrs. Stoner was the first southern woman accepted by the University
of Rochester, receiving her degree in 1938. She studied at Johns Hopkins
University, becoming a medical technologist. She worked for Johns Hopkins and it
was there she met and wed Dr. David Stoner of New London, CT. After the war, and
one cold winter in New London, the young couple and first child returned to
Danville, where they lived and raised their children.
She was an active member of The League of Women Voters, serving in
several leadership positions. Along with her husband, she was an active crusader
for equal rights for all citizens, and was intimately involved with the civil
rights struggles in the south during the '50's and '60's. She and her husband
were avid bridge players and both were Life Masters in the American Contract
Bridge League. They were members of the Temple Beth Shalom In Danville.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Stoner of Atlanta, GA, Dr.
Kenneth Stoner of Richmond and Richard Stoner of Rice; a brother, Alvin Newman
of Danville and a sister, Kathryn Newman of San Francisco, CA.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Temple Beth Shalom
with interment in Aetz Chayim Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth Shalom, Southern
Avenue, Danville, VA or Habitat for Humanity.

Rae F. Scott, 83

Dies Wednesday
FEBRUARY 26 - Rae Firesheets Scott, 83, of Farmville, died
Wednesday, February 25,2004.
She was born July 21, 1920 In Nottoway County, a daughter of the late
Norman W. and Edna Greenwood Firesheets. She was the widow of Dr. Charles W.
Scott.
Mrs. Scott has always been an active and dedicated member of the
Baptist Church. She has served as Sunday School teacher, local director of
Baptist Women's Missionary Union, for approximately 15 years and has been
director of the Southern Association of WMU. She attended all the state meetings
and was twice a delegate to the Southern Baptist Convention. She was a delegate
to the Baptist World Alliance held in Stockholm, Sweden. Following the
organization of the Heritage Baptist Church, the women joined the Farmville Unit
of Church Women United (1979). She has served as secretary and as president of
the Unit and was always ready to assist when called upon. The group looked to
her for the best in leadership for she embodied the qualities of dedication,
knowledge, good judgment, and faithfulness.
Mrs. Scott also served as president of the Crewe Women's Club and
Junior Director of the Alice Kyle District, before becoming a member of the
Woman's Club of Farmville in 1968. She served two years as president, 1972-1974
and 1986-1988. She had been active in the club over the years, heading the Alice
Kyle District in 1968. She was president of the Junior-Senior Woman's Club
Corporation here from 1976-1979. Her duties when serving as secretary of the
Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs included the compilation of the VFWC
Yearbook. She had served on many committees and was faithful in her attendance
at district and state meetings.
Mrs. Scott had always taken an active role In the Farmville
community, soliciting for United Way, Cancer, Heart, March of Dimes and other
worthwhile causes. She served on the District Board of the Virginia Lung
Association and for ten years was secretary for the Chest Clinic held in
Farmville. She served as president of her garden club and of the Town and
Country Beautification Council. The entire community benefited from her tireless
and dedicated leadership.
Mrs. Scott had always been an active member of the Auxiliary of
Southside Community Hospital, serving terms as president and as recording
secretary. In 1991 she began another term as president. For many years she has
done volunteer work in the Gift Shop and has served on the "Tree of Life"
committee, a special Christmas project. Here, too, as in other activities, she
made her influence felt by her attendance at district and state meetings of the
Virginia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha S. Vannoy of Richmond; her
son-in-law, Ralph Vannoy of Farmville; her sister, Virginia F. DePriest of
Farmville; two nieces, Susan D. Flowers and Anne D. Munden both of Richmond and
her faithful friend and caregiver, Annie Eppard of Rice.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Heritage
Baptist Church with interment in Crewe Cemetery. The family will receive friends
Saturday at 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the church.

SPCA or to a charity of your choice.

FEBRUARY 24 - Anna P. Dickhoff, 93, of Farmville, died Saturday,
February 21, 2004 in Farmville.
She was born April 23, 1910 In Prince Edward County, a daughter of
the late Carl William and Pauline Semrock Dickhoff.
She was the secretary for the treasurer of Hampden-Sydney College
for over 40 years. She served as president of the Woman's Club, was a member of
the American Legion Auxiliary, a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church
and served on many other organizations. She collected donations for many
charities including the American Cancer Society and the United Way Fund.
She is survived by her sisters, Ella Nolde of Richmond and Helen
Rose Dickhoff of Farmville; one brother, John Henry Dickhoff and his wife,
Bertha of Farmville and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran
Church with Interment In Westview Cemetery.

He was born June 9, 1918 in Ohio, a son of the late George Ayers

Anne Elizabeth Robinson.
Mr. Robinson was a U.S. Army Veteran
of World War II, a retired technician for Southern Hardware, a member of
Farmville Presbyterian Church and High Bridge Train Club. He was a volunteer for
Southside Community Hospital.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Parley and her
husband, John of Chatham; a sister, Ann Robinson of New York City, NY and a
brother, George A. Robinson of Long-wood, FL.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday In Westvlew
Cemetery.

Dies Sunday
CUMBERLAND, Feb. 24 -James D. Chalmers, 68, of Cumberland, a
retired CW04 Warrant Officer, U.S. Navy, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2004
In his home.
He served his country honorably for 25 years. He was an avid
fisherman, scuba diver, loved boats and the water. His granddaughters were his
life.
Raised in Beaver, PA, he retired to Virginia and made Cumberland
his home.
Mr. Chalmers is survived by his wife of 46 years. Pearl Smith
Chalmers; one daughter and son-in-law, Rowena "Ro" and Brian Johnson; devoted
son, James D. Chalmers, II; granddaughters, Francesca and Cassandra; four
brothers, David, Robert, Thomas, and Quinn Chalmers and a devoted friend, Fred
Hodges of Norfolk.
