For Dan Piercy, 72
TENNESSEE, May 6 – Dan Piercy, 72, of Tazewell, TN, was born on
July 23, 1935 and passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008. He was a member of Mt.
Tabor Baptist Church in Scottsville. He attended church at Lone Mountain Baptist
Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Airforce. He was a heavy construction
operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennings and Florice
Piercy and a daughter, Sherri Piercy.
Mr. Piercy is survived by his wife of over 49 years, Dolores
Jamerson Piercy of Tazewell, TN; sons, Dan and wife, Sandra Piercy of New
Tazewell, TN and Shane Piercy of Kingston, TN; grandchildren, Kyla, Beraya, and
Gage Piercy; brother, Gerry Piercy and wife, Darlene of New Canton; sisters,
Lois Ott and husband, Bud of New Canton; several nieces and nephews, and a host
of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.,
Saturday, May 10, at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Arvonia, with funeral services to
follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Davenport officiating. Music will be
provided by Gail and Robert Noble. Burial will be in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery in
Arvonia.

For Conis C. Gable, 58
MAY 6 — Conis Chadwick Gable, 58 of Farmville passed away Monday,
May 5, 2008 at his residence. He was born March 25, 1950 in Crewe, the son of
Bobbie Moore Gable and the late Conis Bennett Gable. He loved his early years,
growing up in his hometown of Crewe.
Mr. Gable was the husband of Cyndi Potts Gable and they were
married for over thirty years. Conis worked as an auto body repair technician
and an auto painter many years with Fourth Street Motor Co. Conis had many joys
in his life, his love of modified racing; he loved going on vacations with
family and friends at the beach; he loved bringing a smile to other people
through laughter and his great sense of humor; he was known very much for his
quick wit and he and Cyndi loved antiquing on the weekends together.
He is survived by his mother, his wife, his son, Chadwick Aaron
Gable of Farmville; brother, Larry Bennett Gable of Chester; niece and nephew,
Carrie Dickerson of Crewe and Christopher Armistead of Prospect. He was preceded
in death by his father, Conis Bennett Gable.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 8, at 3 p.m. at
the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in the Crewe Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Wednesday evening 6-8 p.m. at the
funeral home.

CUMBERLAND, May 6 – Jack J. “Jackie” Hopkins, 73, of Cumberland,
died Sunday, May 4, 2008 in Richmond. He was a member of the Heart of Virginia
Classic Car Club, Ocean View Masonic Lodge No. 335 Norfolk, and the ACCA Temple
Shrine of Richmond.
Mr. Hopkins is survived by a son, Gary P. Hopkins and wife, Pam of
Virginia Beach; daughter, Sherry D. Meravy of Chesapeake; sister, Penny H.
Penning-ton and husband, Jim of Princeton, WVA; granddaughters, Kristin L.
Hopkins and Carri M. Meravy; and special friend, Kate Shorter of Farmville.
A Masonic Rites service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thurs-day
evening with the family receiving friends until 8:30 p.m. at the Shorter Funeral
Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapel
with interment to follow in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.

Dies Monday
GREEN BAY, May 6 — Cynthia Lynne Borum, 46 of Green Bay, passed
away Monday morning, May 5, 2008. She was born April 11, 1962 in Farmville, the
daughter of O. J. “Bill” and Fannie S. Borum. Cynthia was a social worker for
Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.
She is survived by her parents, her brother, William Douglas Borum
of Burkeville; sister, Cheryl Borum Talley of Mechanicsville; brother, Jeffrey
Todd Borum of Green Bay; a very special niece, Angela Borum Whirley of
Petersburg; and nephews, William Douglas Borum Jr. of Burkeville, Jason Talley
and Ryan Talley both of Mechanicsville.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at
Liberty Christian Church in Green Bay with interment in the church cemetery.
Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the

Edith “Edie” Smith, 71
MAY 6 – Edith Drew “Edie” Smith, 71, of Farmville, died Thursday,
May 1, 2008 in Richmond. She was the wife of Frederick A. Smith.
Born May 3, 1936 in Erwin, TN, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the
late Fred R. and Clara Harden English. She was a loving wife, mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother, and had previously worked at Craddock-Terry
Shoe Corporation.
In addition to her husband, Edie is survived by four children,
Ronald E. Drew and wife, Wanda of Crewe, Constance M. Coleman of Appomattox,
Brenda C. Flowers and husband, Calvin of Farmville, and Dawn M. Peebles of
Keysville; three step-children, Jeanice Maxson and husband, Mike, Wayne Smith
and wife, Holly and Renee Karli all of New Jersey; 10 grandchildren, Kris Drew,
Jessica Drew, Joey Coleman, Jeremy Coleman, Will Coleman, Somer Flowers, Shaun
Abernathy, Paul Flowers, Caitlyn Baker and Megan Garrett; five
step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Jean Franklin
and Betty Neely of Powhatan and Dale Palace of Northridge, CA.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Shorter Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Robert Stream officiating. Interment followed in Trinity
Memorial Gardens.

For Grace O’Brien
RICHMOND, May 6 – Grace Fox O’Brien, of Richmond, died Saturday,
May 3, 2008. She was the widow of Lloyd Martin O’Brien Jr. and the daughter of
the late William Joseph and Victoria Beasley Fox.
She is survived by two sons, Norman F. Burkhart Jr. (Carolyn) of
Chesterfield County and Wayne V. Burkhart (Janice) of Burkeville; one daughter,
Carolyn Kremen (Ray); one brother, James K. Fox of Midlothian; one sister,
Louise Fox Snoddy of Richmond; and one grand-daughter, Shannon Harris of
Mechanicsville.
Her remains rest at Bliley’s Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road.
A celebration of her life was held Tuesday at Monument Heights
Baptist Church with interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

POQUOSON, May 6 – Octavia Rita Pyle, 91, of Poquoson, formerly of
Meherrin, died on Fri-day, May 2, 2008. She was pre-ceded in death by her
husband, John T. Pyle Sr.
Surviving are five children, John T. Pyle Jr. and wife, Judy of
Meherrin, Charles F. Pyle Sr. and wife, Shirley of Poquoson, Howard E. Pyle Sr.
and wife, Ann of Meherrin, Sandra K. Pyle of Portsmouth, and Ronald E. Pyle Sr.
and wife, Susie of Keysville; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 5, in Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Meherrin, with interment in the church cemetery.

CHESTERFIELD, May 6 — William Milton Hubbard, 71 of Chesterfield,
formerly of Crewe, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2008 in Richmond. He was born
July 17, 1936 in Virginia, the son of the late Samuel R. and Flossie Hubbard. He
was a life-long resident of Virginia, except for a short period in Colorado.
Mr. Hubbard served his country in the United States Air Force. He
owned a plumbing and heating business. He enjoyed NASCAR, bowling, fishing,
hunting, playing the card game, Rook, and he loved Bluegrass music.
He is survived by his children, Cynthia A. Barrett of Chesterfield
and William Peel of Denver, Colorado; grandson, Joseph A. Barrett; son-in-law,
Stanley C. Barrett; brothers and sisters, Lois Young, Flossie Woolridge, Newton
and Walter Hubbard all of Richmond; his companion, Katherine Melton of
Blackstone and his ex-wife, Mary Hubbard of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Hub-bard.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Olive
Branch United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Pasquale Marconi, Jr., 77
Set Saturday, 11 a.m.
MAY 1 - Pasquale Genero, Marconi Jr.
(affectionately known as Pat), 77, departed this life in peace and with dignity
and courage on the morning of Wednesday, April 30, 2008 after a long battle with
illness.
He was born in Freeland, PA on February 6, 1931, the fifth child of
Rose and Pasquale Sr. He grew up with three brothers and five sisters, three of
whom have departed this life before him.
Pat Marconi served in the Army Air Corp/United States Air Force
from 1948-1954. Upon retirement from active duty, he served 34 years in the
United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 1988.
He was a cummunicate of St. Theresa Catholic Church of Farmville.
He moved to Virginia with his wife and son in 1991, where he happily lived his
retirement fishing the local lakes.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Jean; children, Jayson, Gary,
Karen, and Donna; brother and sisters, Paul, Rosalie, Betty Anne, Fran, and
Theresa; numerous grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Mr. Marconi lived a long and happy life, and those who knew him
rejoice in the love and joy he shared. He is at peace in the loving arms of God
and those who have passed on before him.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. in
St. Theresa Catholic Church, with interment in Westview Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday night. from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

CUMBERLAND, May 1 - Mrs. Allie Brown Mathews, 91, of Cumberland,
died Wednesday, April 30, 2008. She was born in Cumberland County on March 13,
1917, the daughter of the late Anson and Lottie Ranson Brown. She was preceded
in death by her husband, George Conduff Mathews and sister, Elizabeth Brown.
She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Groneweg and husband, Gary
of Cumberland; a granddaughter, Dr. Elizabeth G. Hazelgrove and husband, Robert
P. Hazelgrove; and many other family members and devoted friends.
Mrs. Mathews was a loyal and lifelong member of Centenary United
Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday evening at
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, May 3, at 3
p.m. from Centenary United Methodist Church with interment following in the
church cemetery.

Dies In Combat
APRIL 29 — Corporal Jonathan Tyler Yale, 21
of Farmville made the ultimate sacrifice for his country Tuesday, April 22,
2008. Corporal Yale was killed while conducting combat missions in Iraq. He was
a graduate of Prince Edward County High School.
He is survived by his wife, Shannon Diane Shanks Yale of Farmville;
mother, Rebecca Pride; father, William Sydnor Jr; sister, Tammy Yale all of
Mid-Way Park, NC; grandparents, Gary and Patricia Yale of Meherrin; uncles, Joe
Yale of Norfolk and David Yale of Waynesboro.
Funeral Services were conducted Monday, April 28, at 2 p.m. in the
Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home with interment in the Yale Family Cemetery,
Meherrin, with Military Honors.
Corporal Yale was awarded The Purple Heart. The Reverend Leon

Dies In North Carolina
NORTH CAROLINA, April 29 — Mrs. Annie George Williams, 97, of 70
Oak Street, Tryon, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2008 after a week of
critical illness. She had been a resident of White Oak Manor-Tryon for the past
four and a half years.
Annie George Williams was born February 15, 1911 in Laurens, S.C.
She was the wife of the late Jim Baber Williams Sr. and the daughter of the late
John Scott George and the late Carrie Emma Cain George. She was also preceded in
death by five sisters and four brothers.
Mrs. Williams was a retired elementary school teacher and a former
resident of Saxapahaw, NC, Burlington, NC and Farmville. She was a member of
Saxapahaw United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Miss Bobbie Williams of Mars Hill
and Mrs. Joan W. Uhrich (Bill) of Flat Rock; a son, Jim B. Williams Jr.
(Annette) of Tremonton, Utah; five grand-children; three great-grandchildren;
and two step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Saxapahaw at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, May 10, at Saxapahaw United Methodist Church by the Rev. Marc W.
Rickabaugh. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after
the service.

Dies April 20
APRIL 29 – Ruth Bradshaw Coffey went home to be with the Lord on
Sunday, April 20, 2008. She was the widow of Ira C. Coffey. Born in Russell
County, December 22, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William Clarence and
Hattie C. Bradshaw.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Coffey Hudgins of Buckingham;
grandsons, Jamie C. McKaig of Richmond and Cody Hudgins of Buckingham; and
sister, Edith B. Sykes of Richmond.
Mrs. Coffey was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church;
retired from the US Post Office; and an avid country western square dancer.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church
in Buckingham on Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m. con-ducted by Pastor Jeff Worley.
Graveside service was held Wednesday, April 23, at the Buckingham
Community Cemetery, with the Rev. Don Moore.

DILLWYN, April 29 – Stephen Woodson Trent Jr., 86, of Dillwyn,
passed away Friday, April 25, 2008. Born September 22, 1921 in Buckingham
County, he was the son of the late Stephen W. Trent Sr. and Anna Trible Trent.
He was a Veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Self Coleman Trent; step-sons,
Harold A. Coleman and wife, Sharon of Roanoke, and William F. Coleman and wife,
Beth of Fredericksburg; six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Sunday, April 27, at Cedar Baptist
Church Cemetery with interment in the church cemetery.

CUMBERLAND, April 29 – Garland Wilkerson, 79, of Cumberland, died
on Monday, April 28, 2008. He was born on April 24, 1929, the son of the late
Walter and Liza Price Wilkerson, and was a member of the Odd Fellows and the
Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Wilkerson was retired from Browns and Williamson Tobacco Co. as
a Buyer, also was a realtor for Coldwell Bankers and had worked for Baldwin’s
Department Store.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Wilkerson and Price
Wilkerson, and three sisters, Margaret Miller, Betty King and Dolly King.
Mr. Wilkerson is survived by his wife, Lavera Forbes Wilkerson of
Cumberland; two daughters, Eddie Jo Knick and Daye Lowe of Tuttle; sister,
Lucille Lightener of Kansas; brother, James A. (Bobby) Wilkerson of Farmville;
grand-sons, David Lowe and wife, Suzie of Dumpass and Edward Lowe of Powhatan;
and great-grandchildren, Amber and Hunter Lowe of Powhatan.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home where services will follow in the chapel at 3
p.m. with interment in Westview Cemetery.

MARYLAND, April 29 — Robert B. “Bob” Newton, 71, formerly of
Suitland, MD died on Friday, April 25, 2008 at his home in Sterling. He was born
on June 23, 1936 in Buckingham County to the late Julian C. and Carrie Dunkum
Newton.
Bob was the beloved brother of Herman Newton of Sterling, Evelyn
Courtney of Henrico, NC and Susan VanLinden of Seattle, WA, and is also survived
by three nieces and three nephews.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 29 at Adams-Green
Funeral Home, Herndon.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 1-2pm at the
