Dies Monday


   DILLWYN, Feb. 17 - Mattie LeSueur Harris, 91, of Dillwyn, died Monday, February 16, 2004.
   She was born July 7, 1912 In Buckingham County, a daughter of the late William D. LeSueur and Mattie Garland Dunkum LeSueur. She was the widow of Thomas Alfred Harris.
   She is survived by her children, Elizabeth H. Dunkum and husband, Marvin of Dillwyn, Pauline H. Christian and husband, Haden of Chester, Kenneth A. Harris and wife, Janice of Dillwyn and Edward L. Harris of Dillwyn; a sister, Mary L. (Bittle) Alien of Dillwyn; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Cedar Baptist Church Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckingham County Rescue Squad or Rocky Mount United Methodist Church.

Suzanne Callahan, 50

Dies Wednesday

   CHARLOTTE CH, Feb. 19 -Suzanne Callahan, 50, of Charlotte Court House, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 in Richmond.
   She was born December 3, 1953 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Margaret Mary Barrett Pettis of Jackson, New Jersey and the late Frank Pettis.
   In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, James Michael Callahan; a sister, Peggy Zimmerman of Jackson, NJ; a stepdaughter. Crystal; three nephews and one niece.
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.
   As a life long animal lover, the family requests memorials to be made to the Meherrin SPCA or your local animal shelter.

Kish S. Wood, 95
Retired Magistrate
Dies Tuesday


    BUCKINGHAM, Feb. 19 -Kish Spencer Wood, 95, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at her home in Buckingham.
   She was born February 7, 1909 at Hunting Towers in Rival located in eastern Buckingham County. She was the daughter of the late Albert Sidney and Jennie Caldwell Corson Spencer.
   Mrs. Wood was a retired magistrate for the county of Buckingham. She was an avid lover of nature, a faithful wife, mother, and grandmother, a true disciple of her Lord, and the oldest member of Maysville Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John Burks Wood; a daughter, Mary Helen Gowin and her husband, Pete of Buckingham; a son, John Burks Wood, Jr. of Buckingham; four grandchildren, Russell Powell Gowin, Jr. of Buckingham, William Burks Gowin of Houston, Texas, Minnie Kish Heslip and her husband, J. B. of Buckingham and Michael Preston Woof of Greensboro, NC; three great grandchildren, Graham Burks Heslip, Mattie Kish Heslip and John Addison Heslip of Buckingham; a devoted brother, Sidney Bruce Spencer and his wife, Gladys of Farmvllle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Bettie Kish Wood and two brothers, John Corson Spencer and Charles Carrington Spencer.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Maysville Baptist Church In Buckingham Court House, with interment in Buckingham Community Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 8 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Maysville Baptist Church Building Fund or Buckingham County Rescue Squad.

   FEBRUARY 17 - Emma Kathryn Carroll Holman, 82, of Farmvllle, died Tuesday, February 17,2004.
   She was born April 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Daniel Joseph and Gladys Mae Swisher Carroll. She was the widow of Frank Holman.
   Mrs. Holman worked at Martin The Jewelers.
   She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Margaret Holman of Farmvllle; three grandchildren, Johnny Holman and Cindy Holman both of Farmvllle and Kathy Atkins of Cumberland; eight great-grandchildren, Patrick, Blaire and Johnny Holman, Jr. all of Farmvllle, Chris, Andy and Shelby Atkins all of Cumberland and Katrina and Bradley Lowe of Farmvllle.
   A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Westvlew Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Farmville United Methodist Church.

Dies Thursday


   PROSPECT, Feb. 17 - Zeena C. Vanderpool, 87, of Prospect, died Thursday, February 12, 2004 in Farmville and her son, Wilbur R. Vanderpool, 64, of Florida, died December 2, 2003 In Florida.
   She was born April 27, 1916 in North Carolina, a daughter of the late Boston Asburg and Retty Elizabeth Woodruff Crump. Wilbur was born May 21, 1939.
  She is survived by her son, Preston "Pete" Vanderpool of Tuggle; her daughter, Betty Jane Fox of Buckingham; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. Wilbur is survived by three children, Cheri Scharfenstlne, Sonny and Roy B. Vanderpool and four grandchildren.
   A combined funeral service was held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens

FEBRUARY 17 - Vernice Rogers Rowsey, 77, of Farmvllle, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at her residence.
   She was born July 10, 1926 In Buena Vista, a daughter of the late Allie and Ola Roberts Rogers. Her husband, Allie Claude Rowsey, preceded her in death.
   She is survived by her children, Carolyn R. Dickerson of Farmvllle, Wiley C. Rowsey of Chesterfield, Donald R. Rowsey of Dayton, Texas and Jerry W. Rowsey of Farmvllle; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a sister, Dora Hicks of Monroe.
   Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, February 18, at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel, Buena Vista, with the Rev. Robert McMullen officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

H. W. Covington, 81.
WWII Navy Veteran
Dies Wednesday


   FEBRUARY 12 - Herbert W. Covington, 81, World War II Veteran, of Farmville, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004. Mr. Covington was born August 21, 1922, in Charlotte County. He was the son of H. W. Covington, Sr. and Eunice P. Covington Redd. He was a three-year member of the Armed Guard. The Russian Embassy decorated Mr. Covington for his services during this time. He served with the U.S. Navy making the extremely dangerous convoy run to Murmansk/Archangel, the main supply route to the Russian army. He was also a member of the VFW #7059.
   He is survived by his wife of 55 years. Ruby W. Covington; two sons, H. Wayne Covington and wife, Carolyn, of Pilot, and Gary L. Covington and wife, Joan, of Mooresville, NC; his granddaughter, Wendy Covington of Richmond; two grandsons, Andrew D. Covington of Mooresville, NC, and Jason P. Covington of Farmville; one great-grandson, Zachary Cohen of Richmond; and two sisters, Irene Spurlock of Farmville and Inez Tworzydlo of Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold P. Covington.
   A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Westview Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4B, Stanton Island, New York 10305.

Dies In Georgia


   CENTERVILLE, GA, Feb. 12 -MSgt. Harold W. Glover, USAF, (RET), 70, of Centerville, Georgia, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004.
   Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Revs. Sydney Odom and Ray Pruitt will officiate.
   MSgt. Glover, a native of Buckingham County, was the son of the late John W. and Lucy Agee Glover. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He was retired from the US Air Force.
   Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Wadsworth Glover of Centerville: daughters, Sharon G. (Robert, Jr.) Humphrey of Centerville, Donna L. (Roger, Jr.) Clance of Kathleen; sisters, Ruby Morris of Appomattox, Alice Carter and Bobbie Cook, both of Dillwyn; grandchildren, Chelsea Clance, Sarah Clance, and Caleb Clance.
   The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
   Heritage Memorial Funeral Home, 701 Carl Vinson Parkway, Warner Robins, GA, has charge of arrangements.
