Closings and cancellations

A winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service (NWS) cautions that people in the Farmville, Prince Edward County and Cumberland County areas may experience wet snow with a potential accumulation of one to three inches.

Chance of precipitation is 100 percent for snow Friday night, according to the NWS. New snow accumulation of around an inch is possible.
On Saturday, snow is possible, mixed with rain before 1 p.m. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of one to two inches is possible, according to the NWS.

The advisory will be in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the winter weather advisory cited. “Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times.”

Buckingham

Buckingham County High School has cancelled all afterschool activities and school-sponsored events for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This includes Saturday’s Santa’s Breakfast and the movie marathon.

The varsity and junior varsity girls and boys basketball games against Central Lunenburg High School originally slated for Friday night have been rescheduled for Wednesday evening. Sites and game times will remain the same.

The varsity and junior varsity boys basketball games against Appomattox County High School, originally set for Monday, have been postponed and are set to be rescheduled. The postponement is due to the delay this weekend of the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championship football game, of which Appomattox is a participant.

Prince Edward

Prince Edward County Public Schools have cancelled all afterschool activities and school-sponsored events for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Boys basketball games originally set for Friday will take place Monday at Bluestone High School. Girls basketball home games against Bluestone originally slated for Friday will take place Wednesday. Game times will be the same.

The Friday boys and girls varsity swim meets hosting Appomattox County and Goochland high schools have been canceled, but school officials are still looking for another date that will work for all three schools.

Cumberland

Cumberland County High School’s varsity and junior varsity boys and girls basketball games against Amelia County High School originally scheduled for Friday evening have been postponed. No make-up dates have been determined as of yet.

Lunenburg

Lunenburg County Public Schools (LCPS) has stated that all afterschool activities will be cancelled Friday night and Saturday. LCPS will be closing secondary schools at 1 p.m. Friday, and elementary schools will be closing at 1:30 p.m.

Central High School’s varsity and junior varsity girls and boys basketball games originally slated for Friday evening have been rescheduled for Wednesday night. The sites and game times will be the same.

Additionally, Central’s Fall Sports Recognition Night has been postponed until Thursday.

Charlotte

The Randolph-Henry High School varsity and junior varsity boys basketball home games against Amherst County High School that were originally scheduled for Friday have been postponed. A reschedule date has not been determined at this time.
