On Saturday, you will have an opportunity to participate in a community triumph that rose from one family’s tragedy.

The event is called Thor’s Hammer. The first annual firefighter games and chili cook- off are at The Barn, at 11851 W. James Anderson Highway, in Buckingham. It is named for my young friend, Thor Stish, a volunteer firefighter who died two years ago in a preventable car wreck.

Thor was only 19, but he earned so much love and respect in Central Virginia that almost 900 people showed up for his memorial service in Dillwyn.

Thor was a Treasure. If you were ever in danger or were just needing help and Thor was anywhere nearby, he would rush to your side and get it done. That was him.

Saturday’s fun events support volunteer firefighters. It will also launch Thor’s Club —an organization where members take a pledge to drive safe, smart and sober.
