It’s not too late to get involved in some interpretive programs at James River State Park. Interpretive programs are held Thursday through Sunday until Labor Day and select weekends through the year.

For the Tye Overlook Wagon excursion, take a ride with the park naturalist to the scenic Tye Overlook. Discover some history behind this beautiful spot as well as learning about the park itself. Pre-registration is required and rides are $3 per person or $8 per family. The Guided Canoe Trip will have you joining a park interpreter for a two-mile canoe paddle in the river. You will discuss a number of things as you float along, and hopefully see some wildlife, eagles, osprey, great blue herons, several different types of fish and maybe even an otter or muskrat.

The group will also stop at Treasure Island (which is about halfway through the trip) to hopefully see some aquatic wildlife. Pre-registration is required. Five dollars per person includes canoe, for ages 6 and up. The Pond Critters event will involve a walk around Green Hill Pond to discover what lives in and around the pond. Use dip nets to try and catch some critters and talk about what they are. This program is free.

Every Sunday morning, join The Feeding Frenzy and feed the animals that are living in the park. Feed turtles, fish, and snakes and learn about what they eat. This program is also free. For more information about these fun and informative events, please contact (434) 933-4355 or go online to www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/james-river.
