The treats were easy to find and the tricks few and far between this past weekend. Halloween 2016 passed with no shortage of activities. The holiday was preceded by a weekend of fun for all ages, ranging from a spooky drive-through scare zone to sweet festivals.

Friday evening, families flocked to downtown Farmville, donned in costumes. Little Batmen and Wonder Women ran about, saving the day by bringing a smile to all they encountered. Princesses and lions leaped in a bounce house as little firemen watched the real firemen climb up and down a fire truck ladder.

Countless kids accepted balloons at New Life Church’s Fall Festival, and then lost them in favor of fun games and cotton candy treats.

Just a step away, down the High Bridge Trail, community members roasted marshmallows and painted pumpkins for Pumpkins on the Plaza.

Longwood baseball players celebrated the holiday in true spirit of their sport: by playing baseball in costume. This Spooky Slugfest was more funny than spooky, but still worth the watch.

Those who missed Friday’s events, or who wanted more fun, could trick-or-treat at Oakwood Homes on Saturday.

Community members seeking a fright-filled Halloween drove through a “Haunted forest” in Buckingham. During the event, Sheriff William G. “Billy” Kidd Jr. was in the forest giving some lucky residents “a hand.” The fake decapitated appendage brought screams from many, young and old.

Buckingham invited children to celebrate the holiday during its annual Main Street trick-or-treating, much like the Halloween Costume Parade in Farmville. Both events brought residents together for a common purpose: costumes and candy.

The opportunities for fun were endless, no costume went unworn and sweet teeth were fed during this fall weekend.

Perhaps the greatest treat of all was seeing the community come together for a weekend focused solely on fun.
