The Church and Community Events calendar is published each Friday. Items must be submitted by 10 a.m. Monday for that Friday’s calendar. Events should be emailed to communitycalendar@farmvilleherald.com.

OCTOBER 28

THE CONJURING, 7 p.m. at the Longwood Cabin, 1401 Johnston Drive, Farmville. The showing of this haunting movie marks the return of the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts’ (LCVA) Cabin Film Series. Prior to the screening, LCVA’s Emily Grabiec will lead a discussion of “creepiness” itself and how The Conjuring, with all its references to dolls, toys and afflictions, relates to the current LCVA exhibition Testimony: Amber Groome. Campfire-themed refreshments will be served and a free shuttle will operate between Longwood University’s Greenwood Library and Longwood Cabin beginning at 6:30 p.m. The screening is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

OCTOBER

28, 29 and 31

BURKEVILLE ASYLUM, starting at 7 p.m. above the Burkeville Library. $6 per victim. Bring a donation of two cans of cat or dog food and receive a $1 discount. OCTOBER 29

HEART OF VIRGINIA FREE CLINIC STEW / CHILI FUNDRAISER, noon-3 p.m. at VFW Post No. 7059, South Main Street in Farmville, next to Farm Credit. Take-out: quart of stew, $8; quart of chili, $7.50. Eat in: Lunch, $5. Meal includes stew or chili, bread/crackers, dessert and drink. To place an order, call the clinic at (434) 315-5701.

DOG WASH FUNDRAISER, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at The Family Dog, 7831 Green Bay Road in Rice, in exchange for a donation to the Southside SPCA. Nail trims and doggy spa will be available.

ANNUAL FALL FUNDRAISER HORSE SHOW, 9 a.m. at the Amelia County Fairgrounds. Hosted by the Buffalo Creek Pony Club. There will be jumping classes, flat classes and games classes. Negative coggins are required, as well as helmets. For more information, email cpembelton@aol.com.

FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL, 6 p.m. at Spirit of Life Church of God in Christ. There will be games, food, candy prizes and a biblical character costume contest. Elder Novey W. Wiley Sr., pastor, invites the public.

BRIGHT HOPE CENTER UPKEEP PROGRAM, 3 p.m., sponsored by the Cumberland Missionary Education Association. There will be a Bible trivia contest for youth with winners receiving a Walmart gift card. For more information, call Sarah Moses at (434) 315-5669.

HEALTH FAIR, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ, 176 First Rock Road, Prospect. There will be free health screenings and testing for blood pressure, pulse rate, diabetes/blood glucose, HIV and more. Refreshments will be provided.

HARVEST FESTIVAL, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Empowerment Temple (House of Prayer) Church of God in Christ, 354 Wood Row Road, Pamplin. There will be food, games, open mic, prizes, trunk-or-treat and lots of other fun. The is a free event for all ages and all are welcome. If you need transportation, call (434) 248-5300.

HALLOWEEN HARVEST DANCE, 6 p.m. at the historic Pamplin Depot Freight Room sponsored by the town of Pamplin and Farm Use Old Time String Band. Costumes are greatly encouraged, and prizes awarded. Fall themed dinner available at $5 per plate. All proceeds to benefit the Depot Restoration Fund. Farm Use Old Time String Band will play from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This is a free, family friendly event.

SPECIAL APPRECIATION WORKSHOP, 10 a.m. at the American Legion Post 8, 1720 Jeffers Blvd., South Boston. We need volunteer’s to help us meet a goal for shipping the quilts on Nov. 26 for arrival at the Heather Craig Medical Control Center in Afghanistan before Christmas. We provide materials. HALLOWEEN EVENTS, at Clover Visitor Center. 5K run, 3-10 a.m., Boo Bash, 1-3 p.m. Games, prizes, costume contest, cake walk, pumpkin painting and a lot of fun. Fee is $5 per child that participates in activities. Hay Ride, 8-11 p.m.

OCTOBER 29 and 31

HALLOWEEN BOO HOUSE, 5 to 8 p.m. both days at the Cumberland Legion Building (also known as the Old Sunnyside Dance Hall), 913 Old Buckingham Road. Funny and scary for all ages, with games and a free bag of candy for each child. No grabbing, no screaming and no charge. Sponsored by the Cumberland Legion Auxiliary Unit 269. OCTOBER 30

5TH SUNDAYS AT FARMVILLE UMC, 10 a.m., combined worship services and a sharing of a meal, each month throughout the year. Come together for praise and fellowship.

ANNUAL MEN AND WOMEN’S DAY, 3 p.m. at Aspen Hill Baptist Church of Brookneal. The preacher for the occasion will be the Rev. Jerry Streat, pastor, Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone. Music will be rendered by the Rev. Bill Davis and the Set Free Gospel Singers. A repast will be served after the service.

SPECIAL PROGRAM, 3 p.m. at Bethel Grove Baptist Church, Rice, for Miss Asia Agnew, 15, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2016.

MESSAGE OF MUSIC, 11 a.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church, 2006 County Line Road, Keysville. Musical guests are The Old Time Gospel Singers of Crewe. A covered dish lunch will take place at noon. All are welcome.

MISSIONARY SERVICE, 11 a.m. at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 283 Sugar Fork Road, Cumberland. Associate Minister John Richardson will be delivering the Word of God. The Annual Deacon and Trustee Program will be held following the missionary service at 3 p.m. Associate Minister Lawanda Hampton will be bring forth the Word of God. We are expecting a high time in the Lord’s service. All are welcome to join us in fellowship.

ANNUAL CUMBERLAND BAPTIST DEACONS AND TRUSTEES CONFERENCE OF MIDDLE VIRGINIA, 3 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Cumberland. Deacons, trustees and congregations of member churches are urged to attend.

TRUNK OR TREAT, 6-9 p.m., at Cedar Baptist Church, 3932 Bell Road, Dillwyn.

TRUNK OR TREAT, 5-7 p.m. at Payne Memorial United Methodist Church. The Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin Trunk or Treat celebration will consist of games, crafts, food, drinks and lots of treats. So, get that great costume ready and come and enjoy the fun. Payne Memorial United Methodist Church is located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland, across from the Courthouse.

NOVEMBER 1

HEART OF VA BEEKEEPERS, 7 p.m. will meet at the Prince Edward County Extension Office across from Lowe’s in Farmville. If you have one, bring your favorite gadget, tool or doo-hickey for beekeeping. BLOOD DRIVE, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Buckingham County High School, 98 Fannie White Road. Sponsored by the American Red Cross.

NOVEMBER 3

FREE CONCERT, 7:30 p.m. by the Longwood Wind Symphony in Longwood University’s Jarman Auditorium. The program will include works by Edoardo Boccalari, Vincent Persichetti, John Mackey, Warren Benson, Daniel Kallman and John Philip Sousa. The 56-member Wind Symphony is conducted by Dr. Gordon Ring.

NOVEMBER 2-4

FALL REVIVAL, at Gill Hill Baptist Church, 1427 County Line Road, Keysville. Prayer service, 7:30 p.m. with service at 8 p.m. Speaker will be the Rev. Roger Allen from Raleigh N.C. Everyone is welcome.

NOVEMBER 5

VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR TRAIL MAINTENANCE, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Those interested will meet park staff at the North Carolina Monument parking lot on Route 24. Volunteers are encouraged to bring proper shoes for use on the trail. There will be moderate trail walking to get to the site, distances not more than a mile. Water will be provided, but please bring any snacks, and lunches desired. Tools and safety gloves will be provided. ANNUAL GOSPEL ECHOES BANQUET, 6:30 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church, Farmville. The public is invited to join in for a family style dinner and evening of inspiration. Music will be provided by the Gospel Echoes Harvest and Mercy Road Teams. There will also be a ministry report and prison testimonies. A freewill offering will be received for the prison ministry to provide literature and ministry teams to prisons and chaplains through the country free of charge. TURKEY DINNER, 4-5 p.m. at the Abilene Community Center to benefit missions sponsored by The Beulah United Methodist Women. Adults $10, children 10 & under $6. BUCKINGHAM COUNTY TRIAD MEETING, 1:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Buckingham County Social Services Building. The TRIAD meets on the second Wednesday of each month.

NOVEMBER 12

ART SHOW AND SALE, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Pamplin Depot sponsored by members of the Pamplin Area Legacy Supporters (PALS). Local artists will display and sell their work. A chili lunch, including homemade chili, cornbread, cookies and drink will be provided by PALS. At $5 per meal. In addition to the art show and sale, art students from Appomattox County High School will have art displayed in the community room of the Depot. Don’t miss this great opportunity.

NOVEMBER 13

34TH PASTOR’S ANNIVERSARY, 3 p.m. at High Rock Baptist Church for its pastor, the Rev. Bernard S. Hill Sr. The Rev. James H. Taylor, pastor, Race Street Baptist Church, Farmville, will be the guest speaker, accompanied by his choir and church family. Everyone is invited to celebrate this special occasion.
