Cumberland High School students earn scholarships

Sonja Long received the Colonial Pipeline Scholarship for $1,000. Sonja will be graduating this month and is very excited about being the first person in her family to ever go to college. She states that she got a very rocky start academically and have been fighting ever since to get to where she is today, taking two Duel Enrollment classes and passing them like a breeze. Sundina Trieble received a scholarship from the Cumberland Clothes Closet for $1,000. Sundina will be graduating this month with a 3.91 GPA. She has a passion for committing to community service and volunteering. Her ultimate goal is to earn a PhD in Counseling Psychology and be able to work in hospitals with children, adolescents and adults who face hardships such as cancer, domestic abuse, depression and anxiety. Ahkiya Allen is the recipient of an Elizabeth Dawson Memorial Scholarship for $1,000. Ahkiya is graduating this May with a GPA of 4.40. She plans to attend Georgetown University and then after a four-year degree, continue on to medical school. She ultimately wants to become a neurosurgeon. Megan Prouty received a William and Ada Sanderson Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,250. Megan has a GPA of 4.04, has received her Associates degree from SVCC and plans to attend Virginia Tech and become a criminal investigator. She wants to study criminology. Megan Prouty received a William and Ada Sanderson Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,250. Megan has a GPA of 4.04, has received her Associates degree from SVCC and plans to attend Virginia Tech and become a criminal investigator. She wants to study criminology. Wesley Marshall received the Lineweaver Family Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Wesley will be graduating this month with a 4.16 GPA. He will also be receiving an associate’s degree from SVCC. He plans to attend Longwood University and majoring in computer science. With his sister, Stacey, being a straight A student, getting a B is not high on his list; keeping the family tradition of getting As is his goal. Wesley Marshall received the Lineweaver Family Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Wesley will be graduating this month with a 4.16 GPA. He will also be receiving an associate’s degree from SVCC. He plans to attend Longwood University and majoring in computer science. With his sister, Stacey, being a straight A student, getting a B is not high on his list; keeping the family tradition of getting As is his goal. She is currently enrolled in the nursing program and plans to pass the Certified Nursing Assistant exam this Spring. She is also a dual enrollment student and is to receive her associates degree from SVCC. She plans to attend Radford University. The representative of the scholarship was Audrey Robinson. This has solidified her passion for nursing. She plans to receive a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She plans to continue her education at Averett University. Gillian Cubbage is the recipient of a Southside Electric Cooperative Scholarship for $500. Gillian will be graduating this month with an Associate’s Degree from Southside Virginia Community College. She has a GPA of 3.95. She states that she has traveled to 41 states and Canada which shows her passion for travel. She will be attending Virginia Tech in the Fall. Jada Harris received the first ever Carla Urquhart Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Jada will be graduating this month with a 4.36 GPA. She would like to get a degree in architecture from either the University of Kentucky or Clemson University. While in college, she plans to study abroad, where she can help less fortunate individuals by providing them with designs for schools, businesses and, most importantly, housing they so desperately need.
