Emergency personnel helped us weather the storm

Winter Storm Jonas paid a visit to Farmville over the weekend and left over 10 inches of snow in many localities. That’s a lot of snow for folks who don’t deal with it on a regular basis. Fortunately our town has emergency resources and knows how to use them.

For the most part everyone heeded advance warnings from town and county officials and stayed off the roads.

Still the weekend storm was a challenge — even in communities more accustomed to snow.

Power companies across the area were prepared; in fact, many of them were in Farmville the night before the storm.

“I was really moved to see the parking lot at the Days Inn in Farmville filled with a line of Dominion Power trucks,” Jeanne Grunert posted on Facebook Friday morning. “They spent last night away from their families and probably won’t be home for many days — God bless them!”

The Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad (PEVRS) was also out in the storm. From 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday, squad volunteers answered 27 calls.

“Emergencies are still happening despite the snow,” PEVRS Capt. Jessica Cambridge posted Saturday night. “Our crews have been rock stars thus far, some even moving in for the duration of the storm. We’ve been fortunate to have the round-the-clock assistance of Farmville Fire Department — we couldn’t have made it today without them. VDOT has been clearing roads (and even responding to calls with us). It’s safe to say we can’t do what we do without them.”

Cambridge went on to commend town, county and state police for “handling accidents and carrying on on as if there wasn’t a complete weather disaster in the area.”

Lastly, Cambridge thanked Farmville Dispatch, “the quiet soldiers over the weekend, fielding calls, coordinating resources and gathering information.”

Emergency personnel who were out in the storm putting the care of others above their own deserve our thanks.
