Another LU foul

On Dec. 12, Longwood University men’s basketball player Shaquille Johnson — who had been suspended for 10 games after being arrested in October on a misdemeanor marijuana charge — returned to the team’s lineup.

While some fans may have rejoiced in Johnson’s return, we question whether it was the best decision for the university’s athletics department and Longwood as a whole.

Trouble has followed Johnson throughout his time as a student-athlete.

Prior to enrolling at Longwood, he was dismissed from the Auburn University basketball team following an arrest for second-degree possession of marijuana, according to The Opelika-Auburn News.

In August 2014, after Longwood had given him a second chance, he was charged with malicious wounding of a Hampden-Sydney College student. That charge was dropped when the alleged victim did not show up for a hearing. Then came the most recent charge of possession of marijuana, which has since been changed to entering property with intent to damage.

While Longwood continues to give Johnson chances, we think that the most recent run-in with the law should have been strike three for the senior guard.

There comes a time when a university or a basketball program needs to take into account its reputation off the court, rather than just performances and records on the hardwood.

The men’s basketball program should work toward building a team of model citizens and athletes who reflect positively on Longwood’s image.

While that might mean passing on some recruits with elite athletic ability but questionable character, at least fans wouldn’t have to worry about suspensions and other drama such as what Johnson has created during his time in Farmville.

The alternative — recruiting talented players accompanied by major baggage — will cause Longwood basketball to continue to lose respect.
