A 117-year-old stone house was destroyed Tuesday morning in a massive blaze near Howardsville in northern Buckingham.
Dungannon, built in 1898, went up in flames in a fire that summoned all four of Buckingham’s volunteer fire departments, along with volunteers from the Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department.

The home, along with its riverfront property, had recently been listed for sale for over $2 million.
According to Glenmore Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Lilly, the fire was reported at approximately 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at Dungannon Farm, located off of Logan Road.

“The old house … was completely destroyed,” Lilly said. He said that volunteers were able to save structures around the large home.

The home was constructed by Mrs. Mary Bruns, according to a history of the home in The Courthouse Burned, on land which had been given to her by her father, General T.M. Logan. The multi-story home was made of up several distinct sections, including a round tower on one corner of the house.

There’s no word on the cause of the fire, Lilly said.

Firefighters were on scene for hours, according to Lilly, and approximately 15 volunteers responded. No one was injured in the fire.

“The outside is of stone which was quarried on the place … Dungannon is not one of the oldest houses in the county but its architecture is unusual and it has an interesting history,” notes the book of the home.
